Finally Legal: 21st Birthday Block Party!

We had so much fun with our block party last year, we're having another one! And really, how could we *not* celebrate our 21st birthday?

We don't have a lot of details yet, but here's what you need to know:

  • When: Saturday, August 14
  • Where: 8th Street, between Massachusetts and New Hampshire Streets
  • Live music by Valentine and the Ones, the same band we had last year
  • Beer garden
  • Family friendly event

We'll have more surprises to announce over the next month, but mark your calendar. This is an event you won't want to miss!

Be sure to use the hashtag #sb21 when tweeting about the party, for my fellow geeks on Twitter.

The Nice Girl Bartender

The lovely Heather was tending bar with Phil on a Friday night, like usual.

A female customer approached the bar and told Phil she wanted to talk to the girl bartender. Phil said "sure, Heather's right here."

Heather walked over to see how she could help the woman.

"No, " said the customer, "I meant the NICE girl bartender."

Ouch! Turns out, the woman wanted to speak with Coleen. Who is certainly a nice bartender. But we happen to think Heather is, too.

Just one of the many funny things our bartenders hear on a daily basis.

Missing Money

Last night, Dave got a phone call.

"Did you pull money out of the change bank when you were here earlier?" Joe asked.

"No," Dave responded. "Why?"

"Well, I know there was a hundred dollar bill in there. I saw it earlier. And now I can't find it anywhere."

Dave sighed and drove back to the bar to look for the missing money. Between him, John and Joe they tore the place apart. They looked under the register, between the liquor bottles and in all of the usual "hiding places" things disappear into at the bar. And believe me, things disappear. And a hundred dollars is kind of a big deal.

No luck. Finally, Dave pulls out the ones and fives from the register to count them yet again. Halfway through the bundle of five dollar bills, he found the missing hundred.

"That's nuts. I swear I counted that bundle earlier and that bill wasn't there," said John.

The ghost strikes again.

Wall Decor: Sandbar Song Tribute

20090509_Ottawa Decor_0004Way back in 2003, when our hurricane attraction was barely a year old, Peach decided we needed our own song.

Peach got together with local musician Dusty Workman, and he called on his contacts. The two of them worked with Eddie Kilgallon, a Nashville musician and songwriter, and co-wrote the Sandbar Song. We never actually gave the song a name, it's just the Sandbar Song.

Since one of our most loved traditions is the ceremonial signing of a dollar bill, Peach, Dusty and Eddie created their own dollar bill artwork. Our art director and owner of local frame shop Fast Frame, Justin, created this collage for us.

The top dollar is a tribute to Peach, the leader of the fun; the middle dollar has the most popular phrase of the song "Meet you down at the Sandbar, yea!" and Eddie's signature; and the bottom dollar is signed by Dusty.

Pictures of the trio are in the middle of the frame. This collage hangs at the Sandbar in Ottawa.

A Manly Tropical Drink

The Sandbar is known for its fruity, frothy tropical concoctions like Bahama Mamas and Pink Flamingos. Lots of boys aren't scared to order them, but we know there are some of you out there who think they're too sweet.

Joe "the Factor" felt your pain. He decided it was time for the Sandbar to feature a more manly tropical drink, which might be an oxymoron, and he set out to find one.

He started by doing the obvious: googling "manly tropical drinks." He found one with bourbon that sounded good called the Bourmuda Triangle. Get it? Like Bermuda Triangle, but with a reference to bourbon in the title. Clever.

This particular drink called for bourbon, lemonade, pineapple and coconut juice. Joe made a few changes and mastered a mix that included triple sec and ditched the coconut juice. It's a cool refreshing drink, similar to a Lynchburg Lemonade.

The Bourmuda Triangle is featured in the drink machine behind the bar now. Even though it's a "manly" drink, it still has to come with toys. We're currently searching for a drink trinket that fits the bill. Suggestions? Leave them in the comments.
