Live music lineup for this year’s block party

Disco Dick and the Mirrorballs

More block party news!

We have a familiar lineup for this year’s two-night block party. Everyone loved the bands last year, so why change it?

Friday, August 12:
Perennial favorite party band Sellout! will headline Friday’s show, around 9:30, after local favorites Heavy Petty open up around 7 p.m.

Saturday, August 13:
Disco Dick and the Mirrorballs are back for the Saturday night set. Kim and the Quake will open the show around 5 p.m., followed by Thunderkat around 7 p.m.

And don’t forget about the VIP kickoff party on Friday night, with live music from the Crumpletons inside Sandbar Subs from 5-7 p.m. Tickets for the VIP party are now available at Sandbar and Sandbar Subs. More info is available here.

Block Party VIP Kickoff 2016

Big news, friends!

We’re holding a VIP kickoff party before this year’s block party extravaganza begins!

The VIP party takes place on Friday, August 12, from 5-7 p.m. inside Sandbar Subs, across the street from the Sandbar. The Crumpletons will provide live music at the party, and complimentary refreshments will be available from 5-7 p.m. Your VIP party ticket also includes wristbands for admission to the beer garden for both the Friday and Saturday night block parties—the wristbands alone are a $10 value.

Tickets are now available at the Sandbar for $15 each. The price goes up to $20 each on August 1, and a limited number of tickets is available.

What are you waiting for?! We hope to see YOU at our VIP party!

Celebrate Django’s Birthday with us

It’s Django’s 10th birthday! Many in Lawrence don’t know about Django, or that it was created right here, and we want to change that.

Our friends at Revolution Systems are hosting a one-day tech conference in downtown Lawrence, complete with a block party so all of Lawrence can come down and help celebrate, instead of having it just be a small gathering of geeks (their word, not ours!).

Learn more about the conference and the Django birthday celebration here.

We don’t know a lot about Django, but we do know a thing or two about block parties. We’re excited that Frank and company requested our help in throwing a bash for their conference attendees—and the public’s invited, too.

Schedule:
6 p.m. Buskers including balloons and a robot
7:30 p.m. Live music

Live music kicks off with Adrian Holovaty (a co-creator of Django), followed by the Douglas County Quintet at 8:15 p.m., and at 9:15 p.m. Billy Ebeling takes the stage.

The event is free and family-friendly! Kids will enjoy the bounce houses, buskers and snow cones. We’ll also be selling drinks on the street in a beer garden area, and there’s no cover charge.

RSVP on Facebook and invite your friends

P.S. What is Django? “Django is a high-level Python Web framework that encourages rapid development and clean, pragmatic design.” Basically, they make the internet for the rest of us.

Jayhawks, get downtown for Homecoming

Homecoming 2013 pep rally in downtown Lawrence | www.thesandbar.com

It’s no surprise that many of our current and former customers have ties to the University of Kansas—either as a student or staff member—since so many folks who still live in Lawrence have some connection to the school.

This year’s Homecoming celebration is coming up soon, and we hope to see many of our favorite regulars back in town!

You may or may not know that Homecoming is actually a week-long event, with activities that have taken place on campus since last Sunday. The big hurrah, though, is the annual Homecoming parade.

Last year, the parade moved from campus to downtown Lawrence—not an unprecedented move, as it’s been held downtown before—but one that we love. We love anything that brings more people to our beautiful neighborhood!

This year’s parade will once again be on Mass Street, but this year it’s on Friday night: tomorrow night! Stake out your favorite parade-watching spot and check out all the cool floats built by students.

After the parade, head down to our block for a pep rally. The band, spirit squad and mascots will be there, and we’ll have a beer tent set up. As long as you’re 21 or older with proper ID, you can drink outside that night. A DJ will play until 9 p.m., but we’ll be selling drinks outside until 11.

It’s also Final Fridays, the popular monthly art event in downtown Lawrence, so this area should be full of things to do and people to see.

Oh, and we almost forgot: our favorite former celebrity bartender, Mr. Rob Riggle himself, will be the grand marshal of the Homecoming parade! Will he step behind the bar again and sling a few drinks? Or pen another ditty on our bathroom wall? We’ll just have to wait and see…

Thanks for twenty-five great years, Lawrence

Well, friends, it’s been almost a month since our last big shindig. Can we just say, we’re STILL tired? You all know how to party!

We expanded our annual birthday bash to two nights this year, to celebrate the first anniversary of our neighbors across the street at Sandbar Subs and also to celebrate our 25th year in downtown Lawrence.

Twenty-five years. Crazy, huh?!

And you all didn’t disappoint—both nights, our little block was jam-packed with friends and family who traveled from near and far to party with us, listen to the music, drink some beer and have a good time.

We didn’t take as many pictures as we usually do, but we have a few good ones in the slideshow up above to share. We’d love to see your pictures, too. If you have some, email them to us at sandbar@thesandbar.com; if you have a lot of photos, we can hook you up with a Dropbox or another method of transferring mass quantities of files. Just email us and let us know.

If you didn’t get a 2014 block party shirt, we have a few left in stock.

So, cheers! And while we can’t wait until next year’s party, don’t be a stranger. Stop by and see us!

P.S. More big party news coming up soon, stay tuned…
