More block party news!
We have a familiar lineup for this year’s two-night block party. Everyone loved the bands last year, so why change it?
Friday, August 12:
Perennial favorite party band Sellout! will headline Friday’s show, around 9:30, after local favorites Heavy Petty open up around 7 p.m.
Saturday, August 13:
Disco Dick and the Mirrorballs are back for the Saturday night set. Kim and the Quake will open the show around 5 p.m., followed by Thunderkat around 7 p.m.
And don’t forget about the VIP kickoff party on Friday night, with live music from the Crumpletons inside Sandbar Subs from 5-7 p.m. Tickets for the VIP party are now available at Sandbar and Sandbar Subs. More info is available here.

Big news, friends!
We’re holding a VIP kickoff party before this year’s block party extravaganza begins!
The VIP party takes place on Friday, August 12, from 5-7 p.m. inside Sandbar Subs, across the street from the Sandbar. The Crumpletons will provide live music at the party, and complimentary refreshments will be available from 5-7 p.m. Your VIP party ticket also includes wristbands for admission to the beer garden for both the Friday and Saturday night block parties—the wristbands alone are a $10 value.
Tickets are now available at the Sandbar for $15 each. The price goes up to $20 each on August 1, and a limited number of tickets is available.
What are you waiting for?! We hope to see YOU at our VIP party!

Family Night is back! Our friends across the street at Sandbar Subs hosted several fun events last year for families, and they’re back this summer with more creative and fun ideas.
This week, join us for hermit crab races at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 7. Sandbar Subs installed a “crabitat” several weeks ago that is home to a number of hermit crabs. Kids are fascinated with them. On Thursday, they’ll host crab races with the in-house crabs, or you can bring your own hermit crabs.
Dave’s little boy is especially excited for this event! Two new hermit crabs recently joined the family—they were a birthday gift for mama from Peach and her grandkids. Stop by on Thursday to see how Jojo and the second crab (yet to be named) stack up to the competition.
RSVP on Facebook for the races, and you can also watch a cute video by some of Peach’s grandkids to learn more about hermit crabs.

Dave celebrated Father’s Day with a special treat: a screening of “Finding Dory,” Disney-Pixar’s sequel to the super-popular movie “Finding Nemo.”
(Did it really take 13 years for them to make a sequel to that movie?!)
If you’ve ever set foot in the Sandbar, you know we love fish. And we love fish movies. “Finding Dory” was a fun movie, and we highly recommend it.
Here’s the best part: you can get free tickets to see it at the world’s oldest operating cinema in Ottawa!
Spend $20 at the Sandbar Sub Shop in downtown Lawrence this from now through June 25, and you’ll get two movie and museum passes. FOR FREE. It’s just a short drive south to Ottawa, and you’ll be supporting a wonderful family-owned business.
Also, subs are half-price after 5 p.m. this summer, so bring the whole family or a bunch of friends in for dinner!

One of our favorite downtown Lawrence events (okay, EVERY downtown Lawrence event is one of our favorites!) is back for the fifth year: the downtown shot put!
When we first started hearing about the possibility of a downtown shot put five years ago, we thought it sounded crazy. Professional throwers tossing heavy shot puts around in the middle of our downtown? Near buildings with glass windows? And tons of people around? We admit it, we were skeptical.
But then it happened, and it was SO COOL. Of course it was set up so that no one would get hurt and nothing would get broken. The community came out in full force to watch the spectacle, the athletes had a blast and everyone loved it.
Five years later, we still love it! And we’re thrilled that it’s on our block.
Join us on Friday, April 22, for this free event. The competition starts at 6 p.m. Six of the top-10 ranked throwers in the world will be participating this year.
But wait, there’s more!
Along with the shot put competition, there’s all kinds of family fun: prizes and giveaways, inflatables for the kids, and face painting. Food and drinks will be available for sale—including a hot dog topping bar from our friends across the street at Sandbar Subs—and a live music by the Brody Buster Band will follow the competition. (They’re playing on our St. Patrick’s Day float converted into a stage!)
Get downtown this Friday!
The downtown shot put event is organized by eXplore Lawrence in conjunction with the Kansas Relays.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up? An astronaut, firefighter, ballerina or teacher? Or maybe a doctor or a farmer or a super hero?
We’re going to help you live out those childhood fantasies with a party organized by our friend Caroline.
On May 4, bring yourself down to the bar from 6:30-9 p.m. dressed up as what you wanted to be when you grew up. And you may have noticed that this shindig is on May 4….which means we also expect a few Luke Skywalkers and Han Solos to show up. (May the fourth be with you!)
A $10 donation is requested which benefits Relay for Life of Douglas County and supports programs both local and national. Or, buy your ticket in advance here.
Your ticket gets you access to door prizes, snacks, party games—and group karaoke. Because it’s the Sandbar, and that’s what we do. And, there’s prizes for the best costumes, as voted on by Facebook fans.
We hope you can join us, because after all: who doesn’t love costumes and supporting a good cause at the same time?!
Bullet points:
Wednesday, May 4
6:30-9 p.m.
The Sandbar
$10 ticket cost, pay at the door or in online in advance

Here’s an important message from bartender Danny.
(I should add that Danny was a regular bartender for many, many years. Several years ago, he decided to go to nursing school and moved to Kansas City, so he was no longer in the regular rotation behind the bar, but he’s stayed on in a fill-in status. It’s amusing that almost every time he’s back behind the bar, the Sandbar’s Twitter account gets at least one mention from a young lady who wants to know who the hot new bartender is.)
I have been a pediatric oncology nurse in Kansas City for the past 3 years, and in that time I have been an active fundraiser for cancer research through various charities including CureSearch and the Children’s Mercy Cancer Center. This year, I have been nominated to participate in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s “Man and Woman of the Year” fundraising contest.
This year, along with the help of a team of great friends, I am aiming to raise at least $50,000 for blood cancer research, treatment, and education. In addition to online fundraising, we’ll also be hosting several fun events in the Kansas City area.
I consider it an utter privilege to get to care for these brave boys and girls as they face their battles with cancer. Their bravery and spirit fuels my passion and enthusiasm for fundraising in their honor. Being on the front lines of exciting new breakthrough treatments gives me a first-hand perspective of not only how far we’ve come in our battle to cure blood cancers, but also of how far we have yet to go in achieving lasting cures for our patients.
I invite you to have a look at my fundraising page for more information about my campaign and about the organization I am supporting! Please feel free to email me if you have any questions about why I am doing this or if you want to know how you can help!
All of us at the Sandbar encourage you to support Danny in his fundraising efforts any way you can! Donate your own cash, or if you’re not able to do spare any change, share this information on your own social networks and spread the word.

Our favorite local pet store, and one of our favorite local businesses run by some of our favorite local people, is reopening this weekend!
Pet World suffered an awful fire last May that devastated not only the owners and staff, but the entire Lawrence community. This weekend is the much-anticipated grand reopening of the store.
We’re super excited to be involved in the special private unveiling party on Friday night from 6-8 p.m.! Pet World sold almost 900 t-shirts as “tickets” to the private party. Dave created a special tropical drink for the event, and longtime bartender and Pet World customer Coleen will be there to serve it up.
If you didn’t purchase one of the special “rebuilding team” t-shirts, don’t worry—you’ll get to see the store bright and early on Saturday morning!
