The Gong Show

You may have noticed the gong that has hung over the bar for the past six months. It was a Christmas gift to Dave, from Andrew. It was very much a perfect gift. Apparently Dave had dreamed of having a gong in The Sandbar to ring whenever he felt like it.

The gong's main purpose is to signal the imminent arrival of the nightly hurricane. It definitely gets people's attention.

And given that the gong hangs high above the bar, Dave is just about the only one who can reach it. Although if you're lucky, some night you might catch one of the other guys making a running leap to sound the gong.

New TV’s at The Sandbar!

We’re very excited to announce that we have two brand new, 37-inch, flat-panel television sets installed at the Sandbar! No, we’re not turning into a sports bar or anything, but we thought it would be nice to see the hurricane video on a much bigger screen.

Oh, and after we had a full bar for the KU-KSU basketball game a few weeks ago, we decided that perhaps there was an untapped market of Sandbar sports fans who could be enticed to come in more frequently if we had better tv’s.

Dave started price-shopping and found a deal he liked at Best Buy, and by that afternoon the new sets were ready to go.

To celebrate our new purchases, conveniently in time for the Big 12 and NCAA basketball tournaments, we are offering up free hot dogs during the basketball games. Bring your friends and settle in for March Madness in a place where you can dance on the bar as soon as the game is over!

New Artwork Outside

Our Sandbar artist in residence, Brother Pants, created a new sign to hang outside our door. It gives our hours and other important information to passersby. We put it up last week. Doesn’t he do a great job?

Landshark Lager is Here!

Landsharklager_3 A little over a year ago, we told you about Jimmy Buffett’s new brew, Landshark Lager. Well, it’s finally made it’s debut at The Sandbar!

Join us tonight for Tuesday night "$1.50 almost anything" specials, and try out this new beer for yourself. The good folks from our local Budweiser distributor, O’Malley Beverage, will be on hand with fun promotions (which usually means free stuff) and people to help spread the word about Landshark Lager.

Landshark Lager is considered a "premium" beer at our establishment, so it’s actually $2.00 tonight instead of a buck, but don’t let that stop you. It’s still pretty cheap.

And if you’re wondering where those Valentine love-at-the-Sandbar stories are that I promised last week, come back tomorrow. I actually do have a story to tell, with pictures, thanks to a reader who actually paid attention to my request. For the rest of you, send me your story or I’ll tell Dave to cut you off.

A Pick-Up Window

The Sandbar in Ottawa now has a pick-up window. No, it’s not a place where you can find a date.

There’s always been a pick-up window on the building, since in it’s former life it was a Taco Bell with a drive-thru. But we’ve never used the window for anything except storage for bamboo shades or pictures. We’re excited to announce that now you can call your order in and drive around the building to the pick-up window, without even getting out of your car to come inside.

There’s a little bell to ring so the staff knows you’re there. You can even pull up to the window to order, but you’ll have to wait a bit for your food to be ready. Although probably not too long, since most of the food is able to be prepared quickly, and we have a speedy and efficient staff.

I posted this news as a bulletin on the Sandbar MySpace page the other day, since we have a lot of "friends" from Ottawa. Apparently I should have been more clear in my message about the use of this window, since some responders (Frank) seemed to think it would be funny to order alcoholic beverages in the drive-thru. Go ahead and try that, you might get a laugh or two. Unfortunately there will probably be at least one dim bulb out there who thinks it’s actually possible to order a Bahama Mama at the pick-up window.

We’ll have some more announcements soon about specials that the Ottawa staff will be running to promote this new service.

Rob the Bouncer

Sometime last year when I was randomly googling things on the internet, I found a blog called Clublife. It’s written by a guy named Rob who’s a bouncer at an unnamed club in New York City.  The blog is basically an ongoing tale of his life as a bouncer and all the crap he sees and has to put up with.  Actually, he calls it "an online journal of the nightly nonsense endured by a bouncer at two of New York’s most popular night clubs." It’s pretty entertaining and he’s a great writer. It also makes me thankful that The Sandbar isn’t a "club" and isn’t in New York City and isn’t any bigger than it is.

Rob the Bouncer wrote his blog for a couple years and ended up featured in a New York gossip column. All of a sudden he started getting calls from editors and publishers who were interested in a book.  So he wound up with a book deal to chronicle his bouncing life.  The book was just released last month.  You can read about it here.  I think I’m going to buy it. It might become required reading at The Sandbar.   It will make the doorguys appreciate where they work, if nothing else.

Brother Pants, maybe you could use this one for your book club.
