Vote for Peach’s niece Katlyn!

Hey Sandbar friends!

Our fearless founder Peach's niece has been nominated for some awards, and you can help her win!

Katlyn Conroy (if you're a regular, you probably also know her dad Patrick- he hangs out here a lot!) has been nominated for Best Female Singer/Songwriter in the Pitch annual music awards. Her band, Cowboy Indian Bear, has also been nominated in the rock category.

Katlyn has worked really hard this year touring, writing and recording. Let's help her add another accomplishment to the list! You may remember that Katlyn has played at our block party before (and we hope she'll do so again).

Click here to vote. Fair warning: there's a quick registration required, but it's really easy and doesn't take very much time at all. It's really easy to vote, too.

Thanks, friends! We appreciate your help in supporting part of our Sandbar family!

Tour of Lawrence Returns!

And we're back. After more than five years of posting here 4-5 times every week, it's now been over two weeks since our last post. We've been busy.

But we have news.

This weekend, the Tour of Lawrence is back. It's the very fun event with downtown bike racing. The street sprints take place this Friday night at 7 p.m. at 7th and New Hampshire. If you haven't seen this before, don't miss it- the cyclists are very, very fast and it's exciting.

And afterward, there's live music in our block! The Twang Daddies will play after the bike races end, and we'll have drinks for sale in the street.

On Saturday, the bike events take place on the KU campus, and on Sunday the events are back downtown.

See a full schedule here.

And another cool thing? All proceeds from the event benefit the Heartland Community Health Center.

We love it when there are super fun events downtown that provide entertainment for the community and also benefit local organizations.

So, if you're not doing anything this weekend, get downtown and join us!

Sandbar Shirt in Cinque Terre

Another Sandbar shirt in a brand new place!

Sandbar fan Allyson is working in Rome as an au pair. She took a three day trip to Cinque Terre, a region with five small fishing village in northern Italy that are connected by hiking trails.

Allyson said she saw about five other Jayhawks on her trip! Rock Chalk!

If you've worn your Sandbar shirt someplace fun, let us know. We'll put it online and on our wall of fame!

An Unusual Bachelorette Party

'Tis the season for bachelorette parties, birthday parties, wedding parties and just about any other kind of party you can imagine.

Recently, we saw a "bachelorette" party that we've never seen before.

It was a Tuesday night, and Dave said a group of girls came in. They informed him that they had three bachelorettes in their party. He thought this was odd, but didn't ask. He assumed they were just a group of friends who happened to have three among them getting married over the summer, so they decided to celebrate together.

He said they were more subdued than the usual rowdy bachelorette parties we see (and they were probably a lot more polite) but he didn't think much of that, either, since it was a Tuesday night.

At one point, though, when one of the young ladies came up to the bar, Dave asked the question.

"So, three of you are really getting married?"

No one was actually getting married, she said. Instead, the girls were students at Benedictine College, and three of the girls in the group were getting ready to enter the convent. Married to God, we presume.

Yes, you read that correctly. No, I'm not joking. (Unless they were, in which case, they totally fooled Dave.)

So to wish their friends well, they made the trek to Lawrence to celebrate at the Sandbar.

And because we know you're wondering, yes some of them were drinking, but no, none of them were crazy and obnoxious about it.

So, congratulations to these young ladies, and we appreciate that they thought of the Sandbar. You truly can celebrate anything here.

Another Sandbar Shirt in Africa

Sandbar fan Donna sent us a picture from Johannesburg already (you can see it here), but here's another one. We love these pictures with wild animals!

Sandbar 2012 Graduate: Jamie

JamieCongratulations to Jamie, 2012 graduate!

You might recognize Jamie. She's been a regular fixture around the bar for a long time now, since she's dated bartender Andrew for almost her entire college career. They even met through the Sandbar, sort of- they were introduced to each other by bartender Hayley.

Jamie graduated from KU with distinction and a bachelor's of science in education. Her major was exercise science. What's she doing with that degree? She's one of a very small number of people who got into the physician assistant program at Wichita State University. She's pretty smart.

So Jamie will be heading to Wichita very soon and starting another degree. What are some of her favorite memories of the Sandbar?

When she celebrated her 21st birthday here, and her friend Rachel fell off the bar- but don't worry, she didn't get hurt. And all the nights spent dancing with friends and hanging out with Andrew.

Jamie and her family celebrated graduation at the bar right after the ceremony, and Patrick, Andrew's uncle, was there to take photos.

Good luck Jamie! We'll miss you around the bar, but we hope you'll visit us often!

Sandbar 2012 Graduate: Kamay

Congratulations to 2012 graduate and Sandbar friend Kamay! She answered our call for graduation profiles, so read on to learn a little bit more about one of our customers.

Favorite Song: Anything by Journey

How long have you waited? Never, I always come early! (smart girl!)

Favorite Drink: Bahama Mama

Favorite Drink Toy: The rubber duckies, I think I have every single one there is! Mostly in part because I would trade my double ducks with other people’s ducks at the bar. Bartering got interesting especially after a few drinks!

Funniest moment at the bar: When Danny and Dave re-enacted the famous water scene from Dirty Dancing. They were behind the bar and Danny ran into Dave’s arms and Dave lifted him up.

Favorite Memory at the Sandbar: Hanging out every Tuesday night after kickboxing class with Michelle, Danny and Dave.

Kamay has one last fun tidbit about the Sandbar:

And that is where my boyfriend of three years and I met for our first blind date with John as our bartender/ door man!

It's true what they say, you can find love at the Sandbar.

Congratulations on your graduation, Kamay!

Congrats, 2012 Graduates!

I've been so busy taking care of a new baby that I totally forgot about profiling 2012 graduates! We've done this for the past few years, and it's been great fun to find out a little bit more about some of our most regular customers.

So, even though it's a little late this year- KU's graduation is Sunday and Haskell's is this Friday- we're still going to do it. Better late than never, right? And besides, I'm desperate for stuff to put on this blog!

If you're graduating this May (from any school, really, it doesn't have to be a local university- but not high school!), we want to hear from you!

Send us a few pictures, and tell us some of your favorite facts about the Sandbar. Here's a few questions we've asked in the past:

  • Favorite jukebox song?
  • Song you never want to hear again?
  • How long have you waited in line?
  • What's your favorite Sandbar drink?
  • What's your favorite drink toy?
  • Favorite memory at the Sandbar?
  • Funniest moment at the bar?

Tell us whatever you want. We reserve the right to edit the answers for space and any other reason we deem necessary. Email us at sandbar@thesandbar.com.

Looking forward to hearing from some of you, it's your chance to be famous!
