This is definitely a show at Theatre Lawrence that we need to see: "How I Became a Pirate."
This show opened last weekend, but if you missed it, don't worry- there are three more performance dates. You can catch the show on July 22, 23 or 24.
Here's a description of the show, from the Theatre Lawrence website:
When Braid Beard’s pirate crew invites Jeremy Jacob to join their voyage, he jumps right on board. Buried treasure, sea chanteys, pirate talk – who wouldn’t go along? Soon Jeremy Jacob knows all about being a pirate through songs like “Talk like a Pirate†and “Pirates Dot Arggh.†It’s the heave-ho, blow-the-man-down, very best time of his life. Until he finds out what pirates don’t do– no reading bedtime stories, no tucking kids in…Maybe being a pirate isn’t so great after all. This family friendly musical is based on books by Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator David Shannon and writer Melinda Long.
The best part? It's a costume contest! Theatre Lawrence encourages all the audience members to come dressed up as a pirate, and there are prizes before the show for the best dressed pirates!
This sounds like a great show for the entire family, and bartender Coleen is taking a pack of children to the show on Saturday. Maybe you'll see more of our staff there, too!

Last weekend, a couple of lovely ladies had some problems with the bathroom.
They went to the bathroom together, as we all know girls are prone to do. Next thing Dave knew, another girl came up to the bar to let him know that some girls were stuck in the bathroom.
He got the key- fortunately we have a key (that he could find) that unlocks the door from the outside- and went to unlock the door. Honestly, he thought the lock must have been messed up somehow if they couldn't get it open, so he was afraid the key wouldn't work.
It worked.
The girls were free of the bathroom. Dave realized then that they were trying to unlock the wrong lock.
See, every once in awhile the lock on the door breaks, and he has to install a new one. Sometimes it's at normal door handle level, and other times the lock is up high.
However, every time the lock is moved (and it hasn't been moved for quite some time), Dave is careful to write on the door and clearly mark where the new lock is:

Not really sure what lock they were trying to unlock. Maybe they just needed a bartender to come to their rescue?

Sandbar friend Erin posted this on Twitter this past weekend:
I spy an @thesandbar shirt at the Royal Gorge Bridge!
Of course we responded to ask if she took a picture. We assumed that someone she was with was wearing one of our shirts. But, no:
I was too afraid to ask [for a picture] but he did give me an out of breath #rockchalk!
We love this story! What a surprise that one of our customers ran into someone else wearing a Sandbar shirt outside of Kansas.

Dave ordered some new tropical drink trinkets, and some of them are brand new to us- meaning you don't have these in your collection yet!
Here's a picture. We've got balloon racers, little cars with balloons attached to them. You can blow up the balloon and then race the car on the tables or the bar.
There's a couple new keychains: a smiley-face heart and a light-up goldfish. We've also got plastic rings with dinosaurs on them.
And the weird-looking things in the picture are finger lights. You may have seen the bartenders wearing these behind the bar, acting like they're at a rave or something.
The finger lights have an elastic band to wrap around the finger, and a switch to turn on the light. Now, since these are a little more expensive than our usual toys, the finger lights are only available as a free drink toy on nights that tropical drinks aren't on special (meaning you won't get them on Tuesdays or Thursdays).
Stop by and get your new trinkets!

In our recent "Thoughts of a Bartender" post, one of the thoughts was "don't throw popcorn at me."
You may or may not be surprised to find that popcorn is tossed at our bartenders quite frequently.
One night, after a particularly annoying shift with a customer shouting at the bartenders all night to get their attention and throwing popcorn, Dave retaliated in a clever (yet harmless) way.
He got on Facebook.
He happened to be Facebook friends with this particular customer. We'll call her "Jan" (not her real name.)
Dave went to Jan's Facebook page and posted:
"Jaaaan."
Then he waited, and posted again:
"Jaaaaannnnnn."
And again:
"Jaaaaaaaannnnnnn."
This went on for a few more posts, with each one getting longer and taking up more space on her wall.
It made Dave feel better to get some of the frustraion out of his system, even if he was only taking it out on Facebook.
The lesson here? It's either don't make the bartender mad….or don't be friends with them on Facebook.
