The Sandbar has a fun new photo-op for our customers.
We’ve wanted to create one of these for awhile, and in Key West we found the perfect example. On Duval Street there was a stand-up beach scene featuring a very buff, well packaged man and a slim, bronze, large chested woman. There were cutouts where tourists could pose their own head over the bodies.
We took a bunch of pictures of the scene, and once we got home our artist-in-residence, Brother Pants, got to work painting a Sandbar version. We borrowed an overhead projector and sketched out the scene on plywood, and it took Pants about four hours to paint the couple on a beach. It turned out pretty well.
The Sandbar even has a camera for customers to use. If you forget your own, you can just ask the doorguy/doorgirl/bartender to borrow our camera. You’ll have to leave your driver’s license as collateral. Or, if the staff isn’t busy, they’ll go upstairs with you and take the picture for you. We can even print out the photo for you on our printer, and for just $5 you have your own special souvenir of The Sandbar.
Watch for more fun cut-outs coming later, we have lots more ideas.

The Sandbar finally has frozen drinks.
If you’ve been a regular at The Sandbar, you may recall various periods of time where a blender was on the premises. It was always short-lived; we could never keep a blender running for very long before it broke, and even when it was working, whipping up frozen drinks was such a hassle for the bartenders that the blender was hidden away somewhere so customers didn’t even know we had it. As soon as one person ordered one, a whole wave of people wanted one, and everyone wanted something different: strawberry daiquiri, margarita, piña colada. It was too hard to make so many different blended drinks and clean the blender in between. The plain old beer drinkers could never get served!
Over the years Dave has looked into getting a frozen drink machine. They’re always too expensive, or didn’t work they way he wanted, or something. But now he’s found one and it is awesome. The machine has a plain frozen lemonade-type sour mix. The best part is you can order any frozen drink under the sun and the bartender can mix it up for you using the frozen mix. We can add flavored vodkas, tequila, or whatever you want.
Dave’s new favorite drink is Winter Wheat. Stop by and enjoy a frozen concoction in front of our open windows today!

Awhile back I posted about the Big Brothers Big Sisters fundraiser, Bowl For Kids’ Sake, and the Sandbar’s bowling team.
At the event, my friend and teammate Aña (look at me, with my Spanish typewriter character skills on display!) showed up with the coolest t-shirt. It was a haiku, but a completely random haiku that really made no sense at all, but fit the syllable requirements and therefore was a haiku.
We thought it would be funny to make up Sandbar haikus and so we came up with a couple that night.
Here’s mine:
I love The Sandbar.
I drink lots of fruity drinks.
I dance on the bar.
Haikus are fun. All you have to is make three sentences- the first one has five syllables; the second has seven; and the third has five. No rhyming necessary. It’s poetry that anyone can write.
Got any Sandbar haikus?

For all you Jimmy Buffett fans out there…
Looks like Jimmy Buffett is expanding his empire to include beer. LandShark Lager is a new brew from Margaritaville that is currently being featured in the Orlando, Vegas, and Key West locations.
What a great idea. There are so many Parrotheads out there who will buy anything with Jimmy’s name on it. I’m surprised he hasn’t come out with this sooner, actually.
Maybe someday The Sandbar will be able to offer this beer.
