End of an Era: Danny’s Last Tuesday

Longtime bartender Danny will work his final Tuesday shift this week. He's leaving us (during the week, at least) to start nursing school in Kansas City. He'll be way too busy to drive back here and serve drinks during the week.

You're all invited to stop by and wish him well.

  • When: Tuesday, June 15
  • Time: 5-9 p.m.
  • Where: 17 East 8th Street

Danny's leaving next week for Idaho to compete in an Ironman triathlon, and then he has summer classes until nursing school starts this fall. Once his shift is over on Tuesday, he'll be free to party with all of you.

And of course, Tuesday features $1.50 almost anything, $2 premiums and no cover until 8 p.m.

You can RSVP on Facebook if you want to, and feel free to share the event with your friends. Hope to see you there!

(Danny's also participating in the Bike MS fundraising bike ride this year. If you feel so inclined, please donate to the cause here.)

Live on the Webcam in Texas

A few nights ago, Dave and Andrew were holding down the fort at the Sandbar when the phone rang. It was a woman calling from Texas to tell them she was watching them on the webcam.

We get these calls occasionally, and usually they're creepy- some weird guy who merely says "I'm watching you" as if he expects a reaction other than "okay….so?" Or the time when some guy called in the middle of the afternoon to say he'd just been in the bar, and could he please talk to the blond girl sitting at the end of the bar, because he'd been talking to her when he was there? Dave said no. "That's my wife, and you weren't just here talking to her because we aren't even open yet." That's the kind of creepy we usually get.

But this caller from Texas was fun. Dave and Andrew created a quick sign for them:

Texas

They held it up in front of the webcam to say "hi" to our Texan voyeurs. Thanks, guys!

A Nice Place to Work

The Sandbar is a great place to work. I'm not talking about work as in our employees (although it's pretty great for that, too), but rather for those folks who need a place outside their office to work (insert air quotes).

We've got free wi-fi (although it's not always the fastest), lots of seating, a great patio and of course- beverages.

A number of people who shall remain nameless take advantage of these things to get some of their work done.

Can you guess who this is?

This picture mysteriously showed up at the Sandbar one day last week.

Doesn't it look like a 70's version of Joe?!? But that's definitely not his gorgeous fiancee' Teresa.

Maybe Joe is really a lot older than we think…or maybe he secretly dresses up in cowboy attire when he's not at work.

Any guesses as to who's in the first picture?

UPDATE: It's Phil in the first picture. We aren't sure who dropped off the picture, but it appears to be from a collegiate event from Phil's days at Kansas State University.

Free Sandbar Music with Foursquare!

Last month, we announced our jukebox specials on Whrrl, a location based social networking site. We don't know if anyone's actually redeemed jukebox credits on Whrrl, because they don't have any type of analytics available. And, unfortunately, not very many people use the service.

However, we've got some more exciting news!

Our request to add a special on Foursquare was finally approved! Foursquare is one of the largest location based social networking sites, and it's definitely the one that has the most activity in Lawrence. For those of you who aren't familiar with Foursquare, it basically allows you to "check in" when you go somewhere. Your friends- or the world- can see where you are, you can earn virtual badges, and sometimes you can even get free stuff.

And now you can get free stuff at the Sandbar. No, not alcohol, because that's illegal. But the next best thing to drinks at the Sandbar is music at the Sandbar, and now you can get some for free.

Picture 4

Every third time you check in at The Sandbar between 5-9 p.m., you earn five free jukebox credits. When the special offer pops up after you check in, just show your phone to the bartender and they'll add the credits to the jukebox for you.

The special is currently only valid at the Sandbar in Lawrence.

If you're on Foursquare already, you can find our page here. Stop in sometime and make sure to check in!
