The other day I searched for "Sandbar" on the LJWorld.com site to see if anything interesting came up. I used to do this on a more regular basis, but the search results didn't seem to work very well. The search results still seem to be funky sometimes, but occasionally they work for me.
It was a stroll down memory lane checking out the LJW archives.
They've got a picture of almost every St. Patrick's Day parade float we've built:
And so much more. More float pictures, block party pictures and videos and random pictures from New Year's eve celebrations and the cardboard boat race parade that used to take place downtown.
We love looking back at floats from the past to see how far we've come! Every year Dave wants to build something bigger and better than the year before. We can't wait to show off this year's float- we think you'll like it!

St. Patrick's Day isn't just a day for us- it's several months worth of planning, creating, building, sewing and dancing that all lead up to one fantastic day of fun.
Float construction has been non-stop for the past few weeks, and our float is almost finished. A mini-sweatshop has been set up at Dave's house, and the costumes are ready. We've mixed and re-mixed our music until it's perfect.
The "beeramid." This is how the construction crew is keeping track of their progress on the float. Apparently, it's not accurate, because the beeramid crashed one day.
It's finally the week of the big event, and we've got float practice, spray tan appointments and socials with other float-building teams scheduled this week. Yes, we really do have float practice.
And, the weather forecast shows a high of 70 degrees for Thursday.
We can't wait!

Did you know last week was Shark Week on the KU campus?
KZOO, a student group new to campus this year, proclaimed last week as Shark Week. All week long, they offered up shark facts on their Facebook page, like this one:
Female sharks are capable of parthenogenesis, which is the ability to give birth without even touching a male. Amazing!
Shark Week culminated with baby sharks in the Kansas Union named Marcus and Sharkieff and shark attack cupcakes.
You might remember another reference to shark attack cupcakes. Our friend Brenna, a journalist and baker, created the recipe after our popular Shark Attack drink, and she shared some of the tasty treats with us last fall.
(Read Brenna's account of the shark attack cupcakes here.)
KZOO asked Brenna to bake up some more shark attack cupcakes for them, and they sold them in the Union as a fundraiser.
Of course, we had to have one.

To go along with the St. Patrick's Day theme that we stretch out as long as possible every year, we bring you our newest drink toy:

Shamrock shutter shades! Shutter shades have easily been our most popular drink toy in the history of Bahama Mamas, and when we found this shamrock-shaped version, we knew we had to have them.

Cheryl, one of our bartenders in the 90's, was back for a visit last fall. She wrote a great guest blog post about the Sandbar, then and now, and she also sent us some fantastic pictures from back in the day.
Here's what a line of bar dancers looked like, circa 1996ish, while shaking their tailfeathers:

Notice the abundance of denim shorts and oversize tops, and the white socks.
This was also back in the days of the dangerous ceiling fan, which more than one person caught their hand on while dancing. These days, we have an awning in place for unsteady dancers to lean against, and the ceiling fans came down long ago.
Some things never change, though. You can often still find a group of ladies dancing on the bar, with the boys gathered in front of the bar watching them.
