This is funny.
Any runners out there? We could start up our own group. Or we could make a new twist on it and have a biking group. Or a scooter-riding group.
Edited: Okay, I’m not sure how two separate stories about this running club have made national news within a week. On second thought, maybe forming a group isn’t such a great idea. Read this. Overreaction, anyone?

I saw something really funny in yesterday’s Lawrence Journal-World.
There were extra sections included that were all about the various things you need to know about Lawrence and KU, geared toward those new students (and their parents) who have descended upon our town and turned our mundane trips to Target to fetch deodorant into a nightmare that takes two hours longer than it should. In the entertainment section, there was an article called "We Should Be Dancin’," and it profiled all the hot dance spots in town, like The Ranch, The Granada, and The Sandbar.
Yes, you read that right. The Sandbar was actually included in a list of dance clubs in Lawrence. Here’s what it said:
No dance floor here. But who needs one when you’ve got a bar? Jimmy Buffett is a fixture on the jukebox, but there’s plenty more music to choose from at this makeshift Margaritaville. One of the smallest joints in town, The Sandbar has a capacity of 49. So you’ll feel close to other patrons here because when you dance, you dance with everyone.
Actually, it was a pretty accurate description. But that wasn’t all. I kept reading the article, which listed several more typical dance clubs like Last Call and the Bottleneck. In the blurb about the Bottleneck, we were mentioned again:
This place is big enough to hold seven times as many people as the wee Sandbar.
That’s funny. Not only are we a dance club now, but we’re also wee. You can view the article online here. I really didn’t make this stuff up, I’m not that good.

If you’re a fan of the Pitch, you’re probably a fan of the Night Ranger, Jen Chen. Jen checks out local hot spots and writes a weekly column in the Pitch reviewing the place. Four years ago she visited The Sandbar with her research assistant, and gave us some amazingly good press after her visit.
You can read the article here. Even though it’s old, it’s surprisingly still pretty accurate. About the only thing different is the song that plays after the hurricane.

Every once in awhile some of our Sandbar friends make the newspaper for one reason or another. Yesterday’s LJW featured not one, but TWO of our friends.
Former bartender/doorguy Erick was in the People and Places section, I guess you could say it’s the LJW’s version of a society page. He was in a wedding in California back in January and a photo of the wedding party was featured today. This wasn’t just your average wedding, however- it was a traditional Buddhist Vietnamese matrimonial tea ceremony, complete with traditional outfits.
You can see Erick and the rest of the group here.
Another photo in Saturday’s People and Places was of our friend Al. He was decked out in his yellow leisure suit for the Sertoma Corporate Cookoff back in May. His group won the judge’s award for best food and I’m betting that his outfit helped swing the vote.
You can see his picture here.
Thanks to Pat for bringing these items to our attention. If you happen to see a Sandbar friend in the news, send it our way.

For a long time now we’ve all heard the rumors about Jimmy Buffett, musician, and Warren Buffett, billionaire- are they related or not? Apparently Warren Buffett’s sister, the family genealogist, first pondered this question many years ago.
A recent article posted on cnn.com apparently disproves the interesting idea.
According to the article, both Buffetts submitted their DNA to a new firm called 23andMe, which analyzes DNA to determine ancestry. The company determined that while the two Buffetts do have common ancestors….you’d have to go back more than 10,000 years to find them. They’re about as closely related to each other as they are to me.
Thanks to Erick, our resident (Jimmy) Buffett expert, for submitting this tidbit.

Well, it looks like Jimmy Buffett is expanding his empire, yet again. A new Margaritaville Casino and Resort will be built near Biloxi, Mississippi. Our friend Erick, an ardent Buffett fan, forwarded this information to us:
There’s an article in the Sun Herald on the new casino that will be
built in Biloxi: "Margaritaville Casino coming to Biloxi". There are
also some pictures available.
It was announced today that the Margaritaville Casino Resort will be
built in Biloxi. It is expected to cost over a billion dollars when
completed. It will have a new hotel with 420 rooms in addition to the
old Casino Magic hotel, over 100,000 square feet of casino space, a
Margaritaville Restaurant, convention space, and a large amount of
retail shopping space.
Ground will be broken this summer on a $700 million Margaritaville
Casino Resort Biloxi to be built by Harrah’s Entertainment south of
U.S. 90. Pascagoula born singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett told Gov.
Haley Barbour, "It’s great to be home," as he played "Margaritaville"
and "It’s My Job" for the crowd at the press conference.
So, if you’re in the Biloxi area in a few years, remember to check this out.
