Sandbar Graduate 2013: Dr. Emmie

Each year (except last year, because I was busy with a baby and maybe a little bit lazy), we highlight some of our Sandbar regulars who are graduating and moving on. Or maybe graduating and not moving on. Either way. Here's the first of this year's Sandbar graduates, Dr. Emmie.

20130515_emmiemazdaWhat's your favorite jukebox song?

Sweet Caroline – because there’s nothing more enjoyable than a big group sing-a-long that involves a mid-chorus BAH-BAH-BAH! And also, because good times never felt so good.

What's the longest you've ever waited in line at the Sandbar?

Lines were made to be cut. I mean, only like 20 minutes or so.

(Editor's note: readers, please don't cut the line. Even Dave (and more importantly, his wife) waits in line.)

What's your favorite tropical drink?

Melon balls – deeelicious Midori.  And of course, any drink that comes with a mustache.

How many times have you danced on the bar?

Twice!  My first time wasn't captured on film but I have a fun video of my second time dancing on the bar.  Lots of jazz hands involved.

What's your favorite or funniest memory from the Sandbar?

20130515_emmiemazda2Right before I got to dance on the bar for the second time, we were waiting for the guys to get the costumes out and such, my friends and I had a drunken fish-face contest with the fish at the back of the bar. Needless to say – the humans won the most ridiculous face. We later capped those funny faces off with stick-on mustaches.

What are your plans after graduation?

More school more school, escape reality!  I’m headed to study at another Sandbar – the beach in southern Australian! In the fall I move to Geelong, Victoria for another doctorate. Then I’ll be a Doctor Doctor and my life will be one step closer to the scene in “Spies Like Us."

Tell us something else about yourself.

I stumbled into the Sandbar for the first time as a hasher – a member of the Hash House Harriers. Better known as the drinking club with a running problem. The hashers have introduced me to a lot of great places and great bars, so Sandbar has great hashing memories for me. I also like puppies, rainbows, and long walks on the beach.

I’m sending along photos – I am pictured in the beautiful blue mermaid outfit. Pretty much the best dressed at the bar. Great memories!

We'd be lying if we didn't admit to being just a teeny bit jealous of Emmie and her upcoming Australian adventures. Emmie, please buy a Sandbar shirt and take pictures with it on the beach.

New graduation pint glasses are here!

Congratulations, Class of 2013!

Your commemorative graduation pint glasses have arrived, just in time for Tropical Thursday and $2.50 tropical drinks.

Here's the design on the glass:

Graduation 2013
We've got them in both red and blue, and the Sandbar logo is on the back of the glass.

For the first time ever in the history of crowdsourcing pint glass designs, we didn't get a single submission from you guys, so we made it up ourselves.

The glasses are $3 each, and you can bring them back every Thursday for $2.50 refills on tropical drinks. Or you can add to your collection at home. They make great drinkware for the post-college apartment.

Graduation pint glasses wanted!

We can't believe it's already April, and that means Commencement isn't far behind. Which might be music to the ears of those of you graduating! Or maybe not, if you're not quite ready to leave college.

Anyway, it's time for a new pint glass design to commemorate the occasion!

Graduation pint glasses are a huge thing for us every year. They make great gifts, and they're the perfect inexpensive souvenir for students leaving Lawrence.

And this year, we've got another option for you: we have boxes to pack them in, so we'll be selling four-packs. More info on those to come later.

For now, though, we need a design. And that's where you come in!

If you've got a great idea for a graduation glass, we'd love to see it. A few rules:

  • No licensed marks, like a Jayhawk
  • Must be a single-color design
  • Simple line art without complicated shading

Otherwise, we're pretty open to ideas! Draw it up, use clip art, whatever you need to do, and email it to us at sandbar@thesandbar.com. If your design is chosen, we'll give you a pack of glasses and a T-shirt, and you'll get the satisfaction of knowing hundreds of 2013 graduates are drinking out of your glass.

Also, we'll feature you on our blog so you can get another five minutes of fame.

We also realized that we never featured the designer of this year's Valentine's Day glass, so look for her profile coming soon!

Check out the 2011 graduation glass here, and last year we went back to a simple design here.

Sandbar 2012 Graduate: Jamie

JamieCongratulations to Jamie, 2012 graduate!

You might recognize Jamie. She's been a regular fixture around the bar for a long time now, since she's dated bartender Andrew for almost her entire college career. They even met through the Sandbar, sort of- they were introduced to each other by bartender Hayley.

Jamie graduated from KU with distinction and a bachelor's of science in education. Her major was exercise science. What's she doing with that degree? She's one of a very small number of people who got into the physician assistant program at Wichita State University. She's pretty smart.

So Jamie will be heading to Wichita very soon and starting another degree. What are some of her favorite memories of the Sandbar?

When she celebrated her 21st birthday here, and her friend Rachel fell off the bar- but don't worry, she didn't get hurt. And all the nights spent dancing with friends and hanging out with Andrew.

Jamie and her family celebrated graduation at the bar right after the ceremony, and Patrick, Andrew's uncle, was there to take photos.

JP001

Good luck Jamie! We'll miss you around the bar, but we hope you'll visit us often!

Sandbar 2012 Graduate: Kamay

Congratulations to 2012 graduate and Sandbar friend Kamay! She answered our call for graduation profiles, so read on to learn a little bit more about one of our customers.

Favorite Song: Anything by Journey

How long have you waited? Never, I always come early! (smart girl!)

Favorite Drink: Bahama Mama

Favorite Drink Toy: The rubber duckies, I think I have every single one there is! Mostly in part because I would trade my double ducks with other people’s ducks at the bar. Bartering got interesting especially after a few drinks!

Funniest moment at the bar: When Danny and Dave re-enacted the famous water scene from Dirty Dancing. They were behind the bar and Danny ran into Dave’s arms and Dave lifted him up.

Favorite Memory at the Sandbar: Hanging out every Tuesday night after kickboxing class with Michelle, Danny and Dave.

Kamay has one last fun tidbit about the Sandbar:

And that is where my boyfriend of three years and I met for our first blind date with John as our bartender/ door man!

It's true what they say, you can find love at the Sandbar.

Congratulations on your graduation, Kamay!
