On Sunday, August 30th, our friends down the block at the Barrel House are hosting a charity event for public safety officers.
All cover charges and additional proceeds/donations will be donated to SAFE, the Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment Fund. This organization provides financial support to families of police and firefighter personnel who are killed in the line of duty in Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri.
The doors open at 7 pm tomorrow night, and the dueling pianos start at 8 pm.
The fourth annual Spurling Scramble golf tournament was held last Thursday, also to benefit this organization. The Sandbar partnered with the Kansas Licensed Beverage Association (KLBA) to sponsor a hole at the tournament.
Dave spent the day hanging out at the Sandbar's hole, passing out special shots to the golfers. Unfortunately, he forgot to charge the camera batteries the night before, so I don't have any pictures to share. I can tell you, though, that doorboy Andrew's adidas-sponsored golf team won the tournament! We've given him some crap for defecting from the Sandbar's team, which came in second.
If you don't have plans tomorrow night, please join us at the Barrel House for this fun event, and help raise some money for SAFE.

If you're looking for something to do this Saturday night, look no further.
Former longtime Sandbar employee Matt now works for Glazer's and sells us alcohol. He put together a charity concert/silent auction to benefit the American Heart Association, in memory of a longtime Glazer's employee, Jason Cleveland, who passed away last summer from heart disease. Jason loved music and the Bottleneck, so this event puts those two together.
The fun starts at 6 pm on Saturday, August 15, at the Bottleneck. There's a $5 cover charge, but that's nothing compared to what you get: food will be catered in and there will be 2 bands that start at 8 pm. Both bands are cover bands that play lots of 80's and 90's music, which we all love!
There will be great drink specials too- $3 UV drinks/bombs and $2.50 New Belgium drafts.
And of course, great deals to be had in the silent auction! There's an excellent list of items gathered already, with stuff still coming in:
- Royals tickets
- KU football tickets
- Cruiser bicycles
- Jack Daniels and Jagermeister leather jackets
- Rounds of golf at Dubs Dread
- and so much more!
The auction ends at 11 pm, but if you're the high bidder you will be contacted- you don't have to stay until 11 to win. Although, it's more fun if you do.
All proceeds will go to the American Heart Association. So come on out, listen to some great music, enjoy some drinks, tip your bartenders, and bid on some great items! See you there!

Here's a story from our Man on the Street, who has now been given the esteemed title of "featured contributor." I don't know if he wants it or not, but he's got it.
I went to Hy-Vee this morning, and the Salvation Army is collection money for a Christmas in July. They were playing Buffett music, wearing leis, coconut bras, grass skirts, etc.
I said to the bell-ringers, "It looks like you're headed to The Sandbar!"
"We haven't been home yet… we were there last night," one of the girls replied.
I'm pretty sure she was kidding….
Who knows, maybe not! The Sandbar-beach-Buffett theme is a pretty good one if you're trying to attract attention. We did it several years ago at our water station for the Lawrence Half Marathon, and we won a prize for having the most spirit.

Back in May, Peach and Dave volunteered to be Red Cross Heroes. Basically that meant that we contributed $1000 to the Red Cross campaign, partially through the sale of special Sandbar t-shirts that we printed.
Imagine my surprise when someone at my office said this week "Hey I saw you in the paper this weekend!"
Huh?
Well, in the LJW's "People and Places" section on Saturdays, there we were. Someone had submitted a picture that Dave, Peach, and I were in, taken at a reception held last June to honor the "heroes." For the record, I wasn't really a hero, I was just there for moral support (and the wine and appetizers). The hero thing was all Peach and Dave.

Bartender Danny is a participant in next week's MS 150 bike ride, an annual event that raises money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. He rode in it last year for the first time, and on his personal page he talks about how his perspective on and motivation for the event has evolved.
And being Danny, he has added his own flair to this year's event.
His fundraising goal is $1000 and he has a week left to reach it. If he reaches his goal, he has promised to shave his head completely bald AND send a picture to everyone who donated to the cause! Now if that isn't incentive enough to donate, I don't know what is.
Chances are, you know someone who is somehow impacted by this disease. You might not think five dollars can make a difference, but if everyone who thought that donated just that much, it would quickly add up to a lot of money.
So, try to give up just a couple drinks this week and donate to a good cause. Go here to make your donation.

If you’re looking for something different to do this week, plus a way to help out a good cause, head over to The Bottleneck on Thursday for an American Heart Association benefit concert.
Former long-time Sandbar-tender Matt‘s new company, Glazer, is putting on the benefit fundraiser in memory of one of their employees.
A mere $5 gets you in the door, which opens at 6 p.m. The fun starts with a silent auction where you can bid on all kinds of things like wakeboards, snowboards, KU items, grills and coolers, and a brand new New Belgium cruiser bike, among other things.
Three live bands (I don’t know who) will keep you entertained if the auction doesn’t. And of course, great drink specials.
And, it’s for a good cause. What more could you want?
