Sandbar Mentioned in a Local Blog!

Using one of my favorite new tools for finding mentions of The Sandbar online (www.socialmention.com), I discovered a fun blog post written by an anonymous guy here in Lawrence that happens to mention our bar.

Jum (no idea if that's his real name, nickname or just something random he calls himself online so he can stay anonymous) made a sort-of Top 5 list of fictional bars that would be interesting to drink in. Sort-of, because there are six bars, not five. They're all bars you're familiar with from TV shows or movies.

The Sandbar is mentioned in #2, McLaren's from "How I Met Your Mother." This is a show I've never watched, I'm embarrassed to say, but I might have to tune in now just to check out their hangout.

Here's a little bit of what Jum had to say:

Music scene: TBD. The jukebox doesn't seem to get much play at McLaren's, but it seems like the kind of place where if you fired up some Neil Diamond or some Journey, within seconds, everyone would be cheers'ing each other and singing along. Very similar to the Sandbar here in Lawrence in that by the end of the night, you can conceivably be friends with almost every patron in the bar because of its cozy, intimate layout.

We think his description of The Sandbar is right on. Check out the full blog post here, and leave him a comment to let him know what you think. Who knows, maybe he'll talk about The Sandbar again- or even better, reveal himself to us!

Sandbar Tanning Party on the Beach!

We love the beach more than just about anybody, and we love to be tan. And now, we're giving you a chance to get tan on our beach, without sun exposure and wrinkles!

Sandbar family member Amelia started a mobile spray-tan business recently, and she's introducing her services to Lawrence with a party on our upstairs beach- and discounted rates.

  • When: Tuesday, October 12
  • Time: 5-8:30 p.m.
  • Where: Sandbar Beach (upstairs)

Premier Mobile Spray Tan uses OC Tan 2U products, which are used by many Hollywood celebrities on Real Housewives, The Hills and the red carpet. Tans are customized and look natural, with no orange coloring or streaks. The tanning process takes about 10 minutes, and it will last for 7-14 days!

The cost is $20 by cash or check. Be sure to read Amelia's prep and after-care instructions here, it's important and will help your tan last longer!

You can RSVP on our Facebook page, or e-mail us at sandbar@thesandbar.com. Please only RSVP if you are serious about coming- Amelia needs to plan how much product to bring. We'll have snacks upstairs, and Tuesday features $1.50 almost anything.

Join us for this fun, unique event!

Tomorrow: Giant Shark Slide at McDonald’s

My jaw dropped and I nearly fell out of my chair earlier this week when I saw this:

62493_117482451643055_117113808346586_119552_2816244_n

Um, WANT! How awesome would it be to climb up into the tail of a shark and slide down out of its mouth?

This fantastic, crazy contraption will be in Lawrence tomorrow at the grand re-opening party of the McDonald's on 23rd Street. Which, by the way, they rebuilt extremely fast.

According to our sources, the shark slide will be in the Laird Noller parking lot right next to McDonald's from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday. And there's food specials, games and other stuff happening- but we can't see past the SHARK SLIDE. And I'm insanely jealous that McDonald's has this and we don't.

Don't worry, Dave is going to beat back all the kids to be first in line to try this one out. It might break his heart if he's too big for it.

You can be a fan of McDonald's of Lawrence on Facebook and follow them on Twitter for more info.

Sandbar Art

Today was the annual Fall Arts & Crafts Festival in South Park in downtown Lawrence. This year, we found something we weren't expecting- the Sandbar!

One of the first booths Dave & I stopped to visit was full of gorgeous artwork depicting local images- downtown, KU and other scenes around town. A giant canvas of the Sandbar caught our attention right away.

After further investigating this booth, we discovered that the artist also happened to be our wedding photographer- Robbin Loomas of Sterling Image. We loved her then, and we really love what she's doing now: a style of digital art that blends photography, painting and technology.

According to her website, the work begins as a photograph and then she uses a combination of digital tools to transform it into something new, leading people to wonder if it's a photograph or a painting. It's a little bit of both.

We bought several cards- one with the Sandbar, of course, and a few others with images of KU, Sunflower Bike Shop and a cool scene of a bicyclist pedaling down Massachusetts. She had lots of different sizes of the images available, and one day we hope to own the Sandbar canvas!

Pretty cool artwork, huh? Visit her website to see some of the other images available- you'll recognize a lot of them!

Say Cheez!

Yesterday we talked about Saturday's Unlock Lawrence scavenger hunt, and we mentioned a fun addition we had for the day. Today, we'll tell you what it was: a photobooth!

The owner of the SayCheez photobooth franchise in Lawrence contacted us before our block party to see if we wanted a free photobooth for the night. Well of course we did! We had a photobooth at last year's block party and it was a huge hit. However, the scorching heat of block party day wasn't optimal for printing photo strips, and we didn't have room to set it up inside, so we decided to do it during the scavenger hunt instead. The Lawrence Busker Fest was also happening, so downtown was a busy place on Saturday.

The photobooth was up and ready by 11 a.m., and Dave hid the treasure box of keys inside the booth. Every team who stopped by looking for their next key and riddle had to step inside the photobooth and pose for funny pictures before they could get their key.

The booth comes with a box of silly props, like hats and glasses. The operator counts down so you know when to "say cheez," and then he prints out a photo strip with three color pictures on it.

We're thinking of bringing back the photobooth for another night soon. It would have be upstairs on a weekend night, since it took up most of the space in the front of the bar. What do you think?

If you have a party or event coming up that you'd like to rent the photobooth for, be sure to check out their website and give them a call!
