Root Beer!

We’ve got root beer on tap! That’s right, real root beer. And it’s good stuff.

It might seem a little odd for a bar to have a non-alcoholic drink on tap and for it’s staff to be so excited about it.  But remember, this is The Sandbar and we have ways to make things fun.

As soon as the taps were installed, we were experimenting.  The suggestion was made to stock ice cream so we could serve root beer floats; that was quickly shot down.  However, after much taste-testing, several promising recipes were developed, some that even taste very similar to a real ice cream float, even without the ice cream.

Another Fun Photo-Op

Dave and Justin created another fun photo opportunity for Sandbar fans.  This one was also based on one that we saw in Key West, by the Schooner Wharf bar.  The guys used an overhead projector to draw the image and then cut it out and painted it.  Of course it was tailored for The Sandbar instead of Key West.  Didn’t Justin do an awesome job with the painting?

Dave set it outside the bar a few nights ago. It was a popular attraction, both for people waiting in line and those just walking by. Next time you’re at the bar, you can have your picture taken with it too.

Sand Volleyball

You probably didn’t know this, but The Sandbar in Ottawa has a sand volleyball court behind the building.

The first league season just ended and we had eight teams participate- the Sand Scrapers were crowned Sandbar champions at the end. It was so much fun, we’re going to do it again. The next league action will start Sunday, August 5.  Games are played every Sunday at 6 and 7 p.m.

Are you interested? Get your team together!  Teams can have as few as four people and as many as six, but at least half the team must be female. The league lasts six weeks and we have a barbecue and trophies at the end of the season. Oh, and if you want to play, it’s $120 per team.

Email Peach at peach@thesandbar for more details or to sign up your team.

You Just Can’t Beat Blair

Quite awhile ago, Ron brought in a men’s clothing catalog he’d received in the mail.  The company was called "Blair," and Ron thought that surely Dave or I could do something funny with the catalog cover that would make fun of Blair, the employee.

I found some time today to play with the catalog cover.  I have a lot of pictures of Blair but it took just the right picture, with his head turned at just the right angle.  Here’s what I came up with:

2blair

We’ve done stuff like this before, usually for the Sandbar holiday gift exchange.  One year someone was bringing the DVD "40 Year Old Virgin," and they wanted someone else’s head superimposed over Steve Carell.  I think it would be fun to make that an annual tradition, picking a new movie and replacing the star’s head with one of our own staff members.  It would also be fun to start watching for extra funny tabloid covers, and putting Sandbar folks on the covers.  Keep watching, we might have more of these soon.

Downtown Shark Attack

Imagine our surprise when we found out that the local aquatic center would be hosting an event dear to our hearts- a shark attack!!

On Saturday, June 16, parents can drop their kids off at the Lawrence Outdoor Aquatic Center for a Kid’s Night Out: Shark Attack! program.  How fun is that?!?

Pre-registration is required for this event.  It’s held from 5 to 8:30 p.m., and the kids are supervised by Outdoor Aquatic Center staff. The event includes games, prizes, and pizza.  And the best part? It only costs $12!! People, you can’t even hire a babysitter for that price.

If you have kids, nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters, or random neighbor kids who might be interested, sign them up.  You can register online or you can also drop by any of the Parks and Rec facilities (Community Building, Holcom Park, Aquatic Center, etc) and register in person.

I wonder if they would allow adults to attend?
