The Sandbar is known for its fruity, frothy tropical concoctions like Bahama Mamas and Pink Flamingos. Lots of boys aren't scared to order them, but we know there are some of you out there who think they're too sweet.
Joe "the Factor" felt your pain. He decided it was time for the Sandbar to feature a more manly tropical drink, which might be an oxymoron, and he set out to find one.
He started by doing the obvious: googling "manly tropical drinks." He found one with bourbon that sounded good called the Bourmuda Triangle. Get it? Like Bermuda Triangle, but with a reference to bourbon in the title. Clever.
This particular drink called for bourbon, lemonade, pineapple and coconut juice. Joe made a few changes and mastered a mix that included triple sec and ditched the coconut juice. It's a cool refreshing drink, similar to a Lynchburg Lemonade.
The Bourmuda Triangle is featured in the drink machine behind the bar now. Even though it's a "manly" drink, it still has to come with toys. We're currently searching for a drink trinket that fits the bill. Suggestions? Leave them in the comments.
Last summer as we prepared for our big birthday shindig, we made a slideshow. We asked you, our customers for the last 20 years, for pictures of you and your friends at the Sandbar. You responded. We got lots of great pictures of you celebrating birthdays, dancing on the bar and playing with goofy Sandbar drink toys.
We used these pictures to create a slideshow, and our friend Tony set it up to broadcast on a small screen above our pirate ship stage during the entire party. There are 817 pictures in the slideshow. It runs for over an hour. That's a lot of pictures! But 20 years is a long time for a bar to be in business, and we wanted to capture as much of its history as possible.
I finally found time to upload all 817 pictures to Flickr. Unfortunately, Flickr won't allow me to sort the images by their title (or at least I can't figure out how to do it), so the order that I painstakingly put these pictures in is lost.
Here it is. I don't expect you to sit and watch all 817 slides, but if you don't have anything better to do, there's some great pictures here!
We hope you enjoyed a look back at 20 years of the Sandbar! We're 21 and finally legal this year, and we couldn't be happier.
Looking for a job? Know someone who needs a job? No, we're not hiring bartenders- we get plenty of resumes and phone calls already for the positions we don't have available- but we have information on a couple of places that need employees.
Sandbar Sub Shop
Our sister store, the Sandbar Sub Shop, is opening a new location in Lawrence. We've partnered with another locally owned business, Zarco66, to franchise the Sub Shop in all of their locations. They've got one open in Ottawa already, and the Lawrence location is scheduled to open next month. Which means we need employees!
Zarco66/Scooter's Coffeehouse
Our friends at Zarco66 also have some jobs available.
Manager, Scooter's Coffeehouse, 9th & Iowa. Early morning to late afternoon hours.
Manager, Zarco66 gas station, 9th & Iowa.
If you're interested in any of these positions, or know someone who is, contact our fearless leader Peach. She is helping Zarco66 fill all the jobs, and she can be reached by email at peach@thesandbar.com.
Potential employees must be able to handle money, and they must be NICE!
Pass the word on to your friends so we can get these jobs filled! Be sure to tell Peach you saw the announcement on the blog!
Good Sandbar friends and regulars Susan and Andy submitted this picture on our Facebook page:
They took a trip to Grand Cayman last month, and of course they took their Sandbar shirts along. (Andy's wearing our anniversary shirt with a white logo, it doesn't show up very well in the picture.) They stopped in at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville for a quick picture. We'll add it to the wall at the bar soon.
