Shark Week is back! We might just celebrate all month with our own version of "Shark Fest 2011."
The popular week of Discovery Channel programming starts up again on Sunday, July 31. We've got some fun things planned for Shark Week this year.
- Our TV's will be tuned to Shark Week all week so you won't miss any of the exciting programs, like Rogue Sharks, Jaws Comes Home and Summer of the Shark.
- We want to see your best pictures! Snap a photo with your toy shark or a Shark Attack drink and send it to us! You can email it to sandbar@thesandbar.com, tweet it to us @thesandbar or upload it to our Facebook page.
- We're working on a design for a new T-shirt and pint glass to celebrate sharks!
- Shark Attacks are on special three days of the week: $2 on Tuesday, $3 on Wednesday and $2.50 on Thursday. They're normally $4.50.
- And, we've got a great new photo opportunity to reveal next week! Dave and Sandbar art director Justin have worked on a really cool idea, and we'll post a picture of it soon.
Leave us a comment and let us know your great ideas for Shark Week! We're looking forward to this week of celebrating one of our favorite sea creatures.

We've got a few new wooden signs to hang on our wall. Here's a couple of our favorites:

Check out more of our signs on the wall by the women's bathroom! Thanks to L.C. Colley, who continues to create these little gems and leave them at our door.

Calling all Land Sharks! The Sandbar turns 22 this year, and you're invited to our third annual birthday block party!
Here's the basic details:
- Saturday, August 13
- 8th and New Hampshire
- Street will close at 1 p.m. for setup, the party will start around 5 p.m.
Help us celebrate with live music, food vendors and a beer garden! This is a family-friendly event and we encourage you to bring the kids out for the evening. Alcohol will be restricted to the beer garden area.
This year's birthday party will have a shark theme. Landshark beer will be featured, we'll have a new shark-themed photo opportunity and we've rented a giant shark slide!

(picture from the McDonald's of Lawrence Facebook page)
You might remember last year when the McDonald's on 23rd St. reopened after a quick remodel. They set up this giant shark slide in the car dealership's parking lot next door. Of course Dave and I checked it out and decided we needed it for our party.
We'll have the slide for a couple of hours the night of the party.
More information will be available soon, like a specific timeline of events for the party along with the names of the three bands who will perform.
A few other tidbits:
- If you're on Twitter, use the hashtag #sandbar22 to tweet about the party
- If you're on Facebook, tag the Sandbar in your post about the party
- RSVP for the party on our Facebook page and share it with your friends
- Upload your party pics to our Facebook page, tweet them to us or email them to us at sandbar@thesandbar.com
We can't wait to see you at the party!

Our Man on the Street, former bartender and current draught specialist Pat was in Manhattan (the little apple, not the big one) recently for business.
Since he was there overnight, he naturally spent time in the hotel bar chatting up the bartender.
As they visited about Lawrence, she informed Pat that our little dive is her favorite bar in Lawrence- and he hadn't even mentioned the Sandbar yet!
We're glad to hear that our neighbors to the west like us too, even if we are in enemy territory for Manhattan residents!

Last month, my brother got married. He has two kids and his new wife has two kids, and we knew there would be lots of kids at the wedding.
Dave, even though he doesn't have kids of his own (yet!), is always thinking of ways to entertain the little people at events like this, so he packed up a bag full of every tropical drink trinket we had in stock.
He had shutter shades, goofy glasses, mustaches, finger lights, sharks and beads. After the reception really started rocking and the kids were getting restless, he brought out the goody bag.
Instantly the kids swarmed. They wanted ten of everything, of course, but Dave set limits and made sure everybody got something.
Here's a few pictures of a sight you might not see often: little kids with Sandbar toys.

So, next time you have a pile of Sandbar toys after a night on the town (or a purse full of sharks), don't throw them away. Throw them in a closet, and next time you have to go to a wedding, family reunion or other kid-friendly event, take the toys. Just picture a bunch of seven year olds running around with mustaches.
You'll be the hit of the party, guaranteed.
