Sandbar 2011 Graduate: Tess

Last week, we put out a call for graduating students who love the Sandbar. Our next 2011 graduate profile is Tess. Read what she has to say about the bar below. Are you a Sandbar graduate this year? We'd love to hear your story, too!

Hello Sandbar!

I'm at 2011 graduate and I am your NUMBER 1 customer!

What's your favorite jukebox song? Lion King- Circle of Life. No one expects Lion King to come on. At first everyone is quiet and is in awe of the song choice and then everyone ends up belting out the song.  It's all about the shock effect.

SandbarTell us the funniest moment you remember at the Sandbar. Of course this moment happened during a  hurricane. My friend Meg had a full tray of popcorn and got so excited and threw the tray over her arms, popcorn going every which way on random people.

Remember the first time you came to the bar? Tell us your first impression. First time I came in I thought it was like a MCDONALDS FOR ADULTS. Toys, toys, toys.

What's your drink of choice? Jersey Shore because of the sweet Kanye Glasses. I wear them on sunny days. It really helps shade the rays.

What are you doing after graduation? After I graduate I'll be in Kansas City interning at KCTV5.

How many hours have you waited in line? The hours I WOULD wait would be indefinite.

Sandbar 2011 Graduate: Bartender Andrew

Last week we put out a call for 2011 graduates and customers to feature on our blog. However, when employees graduate, they have no choice- a story about them will appear here whether they like it or not. Bartender Andrew is graduating from KU this Sunday. Here's a little more about him and his time at the Sandbar.

When did you start working at the Sandbar? When I was 7-ish. (This is true. Andrew's mom opened the Sandbar, and he was mopping the floors as soon as he was able.)

What is your favorite thing about working at the Sandbar? Working with Dave Johanning

What's your funniest memory? A girl approached me while I was working the door. She was with a group of guys. It was 1:30 a.m. and I informed them that the bar was closing and they could not come in. The guys did not care but she started getting upset. She starting coming at me, slapping me a few times. By this time the guys had hold of her and were pulling her back. Apparently it was her 21st birthday.

She started screaming at the top of her lungs, as well as crying, saying "I hate you, you are not nice, how would you feel if the door guy would not let you in on your 21st birthday!?!"

I told her to give us her number and I would let her know in a year…as I was 20 at the time.

What's your favorite or least favorite song on the jukebox? Favorite is "Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff; least favorite is the Little Mermaid CD.

What's your favorite shift to work? Saturday,9 to Close

Worst thing that ever happened on one of your shifts? I gave a group of guys a lemon drop shot (which is a shot of citron with a lemon covered in sugar)….turns out I put salt on the lemons….they were not happy.

What are your future plans? Working for KU Athletics in the Marketing Department, while getting my MBA in Finance

If you see Andrew, be sure to congratulate him on his graduation!

Sandbar 2011 Graduate: Kristina

Last week, we put out a call for graduating students who love the Sandbar. Our first 2011 graduate profile is Kristina. Read what she has to say about the bar below. Are you a Sandbar graduate this year? We'd love to hear your story, too!

My name is Kristina, and I am a senior from Palos Verdes, California.

T20110513_kristinavillardi_grad_0003he Sandbar is my absolutely my favorite place in Lawrence! It combines the small, college town feel with a little taste of home for me.

From the moment I discovered the Sandbar it has been my home away from home, and my first choice for any night of the week. While the weekends are always fun, it is those random weeknights where the bar has a mix of locals and college students and the oldies on the jukebox that I will always remember!

20110513_kristinavillardi_grad_0004We've even named our favorite fish, Gilbert!

My drink of choice is the Pink Flamingo! And of course, a Dirty Banana shot of the surf board!

I don't know where life after graduation will take me (here's hoping for a job in Vegas!) but I know the Sandbar will be a part of every visit I make back to Lawrence! I only hope I can be as fun as these guys when I get older! I'm sure they Sandbar song will be stuck in my head for the rest of my life — Meet me down at the Sandbar, HEY!

Friday the 13th at The Sandbar

Here's a guest blog from long-time bartender Heather, works the Friday 5-9 shift. Last Friday was Heather's first shift back after several days off, and it happened to be Friday the 13th. Welcome back, Heather!

Friday the 13th, another Friday night down at The Sandbar- or so I thought walking in the door. That was before five bar crawls, a bachelorette party and a birthday celebration made their way through our doors.  Yes, that’s right: five bar crawls in just four hours.

One group of bar crawlers got out the super long shotski, one group sang their sorority song, there were matching T-shirts, Dirty Banana shots, Shark Attacks, Bahama Mamas, broken glassware, yelling, hugging, and photo-taking. One group had a guy calling out the remaining time in the bar, which, having been on a bar crawl or two, I thought was awesome.

Most of our patrons were quite patient with the ruckus and, in fact, seemed amused by all of it. In addition to all of the festivities we had old friends, new friends, a  just-turned-21-year-old and his family, a cute little guy in his stroller, a soon-to-be-married couple out on a date, a potential romance blooming and, of course, some KU Grads.

Personally, I think the ghost may have even been in attendance as well. We have a handy step stool for those of us who aren't Dave’s height. I was getting down from pulling a couple of T-shirts and missed the bottom step. Instead of crashing to the floor I just kind of… landed. Okay, so it isn’t that far to the ground, but I am a klutz of the highest order.  Which was unfortunate for Phil on this particular night as I did actually stomp on his foot once or twice.

At the end of it all I can’t help but think that Jimmy Buffet could probably turn this particular night into one heck of a song!

The night was so full of entertainment that we'll have several more guest blogs from Heather about the evening. Stay tuned!
