Happy New Year!

Goodbye 2009, hello 2010! All of us at The Sandbar wish you a wonderful new year!

Tonight, the last night of 2009, features not only a full moon but also a blue moon. What's a blue moon?  Well, according to my fine sources (Wikipedia!):

A blue moon is a full moon
that is not timed to the regular monthly pattern. Most years have
twelve full moons which occur approximately monthly, but in addition to
those twelve full lunar cycles, each solar calendar year contains an
excess of roughly eleven days compared to the lunar year. The extra
days accumulate, so that every two or three years (7 times in the
19-year Metonic cycle),
there is an extra full moon. The extra moon is called a "blue moon."
Different definitions place the "extra" moon at different times.

What does this mean, really? Well, the moon won't be blue. It's just a second full moon in December. (Great. Please don't tell Dave this. He already believes that full moons bring out the crazies, and he might hide in the basement if he knows it's another full moon tonight.)

According to CNN, the last time a blue moon happened on New Year's Eve was 1990. It's pretty cool that it's happening at the end of a decade this time.

Have a blast tonight, whether you celebrate with us in Lawrence or Ottawa or choose to do something else. And be safe!

Don't forget, if you're in Lawrence, you can call 842-TAXI or send a text message to TAB4CAB and Tipsy Taxi will give you a free ride home. However, we also advise that you have alternate plans in place in case Tipsy Taxi is really busy and can't pick you up when you're ready to go home.

Update:

I forgot to mention our specials tonight!

Since it's Thursday, we'll still be running our normal "Tropical Thursday" special, but with a slight change. The special includes all of our specialty tropical drinks (minus the Shark Attack, sorry!), and tonight will also include Trashcan Punch.

Tropical drinks are $3 tonight. Buy your limited edition New Year's Eve pint glass for $3, or bring back one you already have.

Also tonight, we will have $2 Blue Moon shots, in honor of tonight's blue moon.

Out with 2008, In with 2009!

Happy New Year to everyone!

The Sandbar had another great new year's eve celebration last night. It's always an interesting night- not a lot of regulars, but lots of other people who maybe don't go out that much. There's hardly any turnover all night, and because of that there's almost never a line; the people who show up after the bar is full know they'll spend an hour in line hoping for someone to leave.

Hayley tended bar during the early shift, which actually got pretty busy with people coming in to watch the Insight Bowl game. Chris and Danny took over at 9 p.m.; don't they look like they're working in this picture?  And check out the new addition to Danny's face.

We started charging a $10 cover during the last part of the game. A lot higher than normal, but since there's almost no turnover and surprisingly people really don't drink like fish, and it's a holiday, it seemed justified. We heard there were places in town charging $25 and up just to get in, not even including any food.

Speaking of food, Dave put out a spread of hot dogs, meatballs with marinara, nachos, and little smokies. All the great bar food we all love. The entire bar made a champagne toast at midnight and welcomed the new year.

Overall it was a pretty good night. No scuffles, no super-drunk people who needed to be escorted outside (well, except the lady in the funky tights who had to leave really early), and everyone was in a really good mood.

We hope you had fun, too, wherever you were!

Photos from the celebration have been uploaded to The Sandbar's Flickr photostream.  If you're a Flickr member, you can join The Sandbar group and upload your favorite Sandbar photos to share with members.

New Year’s Eve 2009 Plans

I'm briefly interrupting the recap of the annual Christmas party to give you important information about this year's New Year's Eve bash.

Lawrence:

Come in early and watch the KU Jayhawks take on the Minnesota Gophers in the Insight Bowl. The game starts at 5 p.m., and it's televised on a channel we actually get. That's sometimes a rarity, so take advantage of it while you can.

As soon as halftime starts, the cover charge starts. It's $10 at the door. Remember, it's New Year's Eve and we fill up early, and unlike most other nights, there's very little turnover.

We'll have snacks, party favors, and a champagne toast at midnight. We aren't having a theme party this year, but don't let that stop you; wear a silly costume if you want, or just dress up in your New Year's best.

Ottawa:

We rented a cab for the night! Call Coopey at the Sandbar in Ottawa (242-8888) to arrange transportation. If you live in the area, we'll pick you up and take you home.

Ottawa is also hosting a special prime rib dinner from 6-8 pm; $12.95 includes a salad and baked potato. Call ahead for reservations and they'll set up a table for you.

The rest of the evening includes a trivia game, party favors, champagne, and the ever-popular cash cage. Breakfast will be served from 12:15 to 1:15 am.

Cover charge starts at 9 p.m.

Back to the rest of the Christmas party stories tomorrow.

Happy New Year from The Sandbar!

Goodbye to 2007 and welcome 2008!

Well, Dave and I are off to sunny Miami and the Orange Bowl tomorrow; after a big night tonight. The Sandbar will be well represented as doorguy Andrew is traveling with us, and bartender Tegan is traveling with the athletic department. And of course many of our friends and customers will be there as well.

Lucky for you, I’ve figured out some nifty new ways to post updates here from my Christmas-present iPhone. I just tested it out and sent a nearly life-sized photo of Joe to the blog (it’s now been deleted, so as not to scare you all off, but I confirmed that it worked).

So even though we’ll be on vacation…I hope to still provide some updates here for the loyal fans. Maybe even a shot of Sandbar shirts on the beach?

Remember to party responsibly tonight!
