The Sandbar crew showed up on Saturday in North Lawrence to help build a house for Habitat for Humanity and our friend Jen.
Thanks to Heather, Coleen, Justin, Michelle, Morgan, Rena, Pat, Mandy, Matt, Aña, Phil, Bridget, Ron, John, Scotty, Dave, and Debbi for giving up part of their Saturday to work in the mud and {sometime} rain. I hope I didn’t leave anyone out. We had a great turnout.
The Comfort Neighborhood in North Lawrence is dedicated to Habitat for Humanity homes, several of which looked like they were finished and perhaps occupied already, and several others were in various states of construction.
Some of our group spent most of their time working on a house that was closer to being finished than Jen’s- they
hung drywall on the inside of the house for most of the day. Others of us worked on Jen’s house. Our volunteers got the outside of her new home primed for paint and sealed up all the nails and seams.
It really is amazing to see how much work gets done in such a short period of time, and that it’s all done by volunteers. Jen’s house has to be completed by June 30, so we might try to plan another Sandbar work day in June. If you are interested in helping send us an email and we’ll let you know the details. Or, you can always just show up any Saturday at the work site, and they’ll have something for you to do.

The Sandbar is putting a work crew together to help build a Habitat for Humanity house in North Lawrence. Our friend Jen will be the recipient of one of the homes. We’re very excited for her and her family. You can help us build!
We are going to work on Saturday, May 26, the weekend before Memorial Day. Construction is officially from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and any time that you are available is fine. Tools and equipment are provided; however, if you have tool belts or gloves, bring them along. Lunch will also be provided for the work crew, and of course we’ll venture over to the bar afterwards for some refreshing cocktails.
The Sandbar is hoping to challenge some other groups around town, maybe some other bars, to make a showing at the construction site as well. If you’re interested in participating in our building day, send us an email. We need to have an approximate number of volunteers so that enough lunch will be available.
And even if you can’t help us, check back later for pictures and updates.

Dave has volunteered to be an American Red Cross Hero.
The Heroes have the task of helping to raise money for the American Red Cross. Our goal is to raise $1000 to donate to this organization, and we’re asking you to help. Here are a couple things you can do while you’re at the bar:
- Buy a hurricane. For just $20, you can have your own special hurricane. You can be the mermaid/merman or choose someone else. You’ll also receive a souvenir Sandbar shot glass.
- Buy a photo. We just invested in a sharp little portable photo printer to go along with our digital camera. If you forgot to bring your camera along to the bar, no worries- you can borrow ours. We’ll print out your picture on the spot for just $5.
One hundred percent of the money raised from the hurricanes and photos will be donated to the Red Cross. Not only will you have fun and have a permanent memory; you’ll be helping people.

If you ride a bike and live in Lawrence, read on.
Headquarters Counseling Center is having their 4th annual fundraising event, Life Support Rally, this Saturday, April 28. The event includes a 12, 20, 37, or 50 mile bike ride which includes SAG stops with food and drink along the way. This year, participants can also choose a 2, 4, or 6 mile walk instead of the bike ride. The 37 mile ride is to commemorate the 37 years of service Headquarters has provided the community.
Headquarters provides a variety of services, including counseling and support for personal concerns, suicide intervention, information about drugs, AIDS, and other diseases, and referrals to community services for financial support, housing and other concerns. Headquarters also provides educational services to the community as a whole such as school programs on children’s safety, volunteer counselor training, and other consultations and training for university staff and service providers. The funds raised through the Life Support Rally go to support the services Headquarters provides.
Registration is $25 for most bicycle-riding participants, which includes a t-shirt. There are different registration categories for couples, students, and seniors as well. Registration for the walk is $10 (no t-shirt included). You can register online here up to 24 hours before the event.
So if you’re not busy this Saturday, head on out to Sunflower Elementary School, where the ride/walk will begin and end. A fun festival takes place after the event with free lunch for the riders. The Balloon Man will be there as well. And you don’t want to miss the 2nd Annual Chicken Chuckin’ Contest (rubber of course!)!
