Long-time Friday afternoon/early evening bartender Heather is getting married next weekend. Her bachelorette party ruckus was last weekend, and I think it's taken all of the party-goers this whole week to recover.
A small group of ladies that included the bridal party met for an early dinner and a quick tour by limo of some of Heather's memorable Lawrence locations- Louise's West, her college sorority house, Lawrence High School, and Jayhawk Boulevard.
The party heated up when the group arrived back at The Sandbar (of course!) and met up with a larger group of women who were ready to give Heather a fun night celebrating the end of the single life. Peach bought the gals a round of drinks, we started our scavenger hunt game (find a bald man! find someone wearing blue toenail polish! find a Clydesdale!), and then we were off.
First stop: the dueling pianos down the street at the Barrel House. Heather and her mom danced on stage while the crowd cheered them on. After several drinks there, the group moved on to the newest Mass Street hotspot, Tonic. Next up was Henry's Upstairs, and finally back to the Sandbar.
It was a fun night of feather boas, tiaras, high heels, and girlfriends.

Heather's fiance, Ken, had his bachelor party the same night. The boys played poker at Ken's house in Shawnee, and word on the street is that someone stole a Girls Gone Wild video.
If you see Heather or Ken this week, be sure to congratulate them and wish them well on their upcoming marriage!

Builder Dave is at it again- more new construction has appeared at The Sandbar.
We've had the same wobbly tables for a long time now, and the convenience store remnant tops have always irritated Dave more than the wobbles. I doubt the customers care- it's a dive bar, after all- but Dave's rather particular.
Since he had nothing else to do one day, he shaped and sanded and varnished new tabletops in his home workshop a few weeks ago. He had ulterior motives, also- the old tabletops caused the chairs to sit farther out into the path from the front of the bar to the back, and on busy nights it causes quite a bottleneck.
Now, the two anchor tables- the one right beside the fishtank and the one in the back right in front of the window box- are triangle shaped. The tables in between are much smaller and sort of shield-shaped. The smaller size helps keep people's chairs pulled in closer, leaving a larger walkway through the bar.

Funny story about these table tops. Dave took them to the bar late on a recent Monday night. The bar randomly got busy, and he was distracted by the crowd and also by some good friends who were there. He set the table tops down in the corner while he chatted, and when he looked up they were gone.
He was pretty sure which group was the culprit, and fortunately a good friend (who also happens to be one of Lawrence's finest) knew at least one person in the group and where they worked. He made a trip down to their downtown Lawrence place of employment the next day, and Dave followed up a few days later. The manager made a phone call, and our tabletops finally showed up that Thursday night.

Our first franchise location of the Sandbar Sub Shop is up and running, and it looks fabulous!
The new Sandbar Sub Shop is located inside the Zarco66 station in Ottawa, Kansas, at 2518 East Logan. It's near the intersection of I-35 and 68 Highway. The station features gasoline and diesel fuel, a touch free car wash, and a variety of great food inside. We're excited that Sandbar Subs are now available there, too!
Peach helped out with the decor, and there's lots of tin-roof awnings, bright colors, surfboards, and tropical accents. The sandwiches are the same ones already served at our original location in downtown Ottawa. The staff is outfitted in crazy Hawaiian t-shirts.
The Zarco66 stations will become known as the Zarco Oasis- a place where you can fill up, stock up, and eat great food, all in a relaxing tropical atmosphere. My favorite part? The Sandbar Song playing over the speakers at the gas pumps.
The next Zarco66 station slated for a Sandbar Sub Shop is the one on East 23rd Street in Lawrence- current plans are to have it open within the next six weeks.
A recent article in the Lawrence Journal-World mentioned the Sandbar Sub Shops/Zarco66 relationship.
