Sandbar Shirt in Texas

We might not be able to get Lone Star Beer in Kansas, but that didn't stop Dave from posing in his Sandbar shirt with the giant sign at Gruene Hall in Gruene, Texas. He drank lots of Lone Star Beer there, too.

Where has your Sandbar shirt been? Send us your pictures of you or your friends sporting a Sandbar shirt in someplace cool! We'll feature you on our blog and put your picture on our wall of fame!

We’re One of 100,000

We’re still super excited over our “Favorite Places” window decal from Google, and we wanted to find out more about this awesome surprise.

According to the Official Google Blog, the company sent 100,000 decals to local business in the United States. They chose the businesses that were the most sought out and researched on Google and Google Maps.  These “Favorite Places” are located in over 9000 towns and in all 50 states.

Another FAQ section that Google provided states that the selected businesses represent less than 1% of the 28 million businesses in the country. Exciting!

The reason behind it? It’s part of an overall effort to help provide people with the best local business results when trying to figure out where to go. They also plan to send out new waves of window decals to qualifying businesses. Apparently we were in the first round!

You can see a sample of Favorite Places in 20 of the largest U.S. cities here.

We haven’t hung the decal in the window yet, because we’re still trying to find a good spot that’s visible, but not so accessible that someone would steal it. And, I’m still trying to figure out how to scan the QR code- I downloaded the QuickMark app that the article recommended, but I haven’t had any luck getting the scan to work. Supposedly, once a clear scan is picked up, the app will bring up a page that has business info, hours, and reviews.

Google has a fun (and kind of cheesy) little video that shows how all this works.

Walk With The Sandbar at the 2010 Walk MS

Many of us who work and play at The Sandbar personally know someone who
is affected by Multiple Sclerosis. We have friends and relatives who are diagnosed with
MS, and many friends and relatives who know someone with MS.

The symptoms of MS are different for everyone. You may not be able to walk, you may suddenly have impaired vision, or your memory may fail for no reason. There are 400,000 people living with MS in the United States, and no cure is available- yet.

We've mentioned MS before- bartender Danny has raised lots of funds for MS by riding in the MS150 bike ride for the past three years.

Walk MS is an annual fundraising event sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The funds support research for a cure, as well as provide programs to address the needs of people living with MS.

The Sandbar has formed a team for this year's Walk MS in Lawrence. The walk is Saturday, April 10, at 9 a.m. And of course it's going to be a blast- we're The Sandbar after all!

Peach has very generously offered for The Sandbar to match every dollar raised, up to $500. Every walker will receive a FREE Sandbar t-shirt. And after the walk, everyone's invited back to The Sandbar for a team party with snacks and drink specials.

So, what are you waiting for? Join our team!

If you aren't interested in walking with us, you can still donate to the cause. Go to our team page and pick one of the team members; you can donate on their personal page. All donations to team members count toward the team goal of $3000.

And, if you don't want to walk and you aren't able to donate- help us out by at least spreading the word and cheering us on at the event!

Best Halloween Costume: Shark Attack and Bahama Mama

We've long since forgotten about Halloween with all the other holidays and costumes that have occupied us since October. Until the other night, when customer Devin told Dave about his Halloween costume last year.

Devin and his friend dressed up in the ultimate Sandbar fan costumes: a Shark Attack and a Bahama Mama! Devin kindly sent us pictures of their attire and gave us permission to post here for the world to see.

The guys took vinyl sharks and rubber duck toys from actual Sandbar drinks and attached them to their shirts, complete with "blood" for the Shark Attack costume. Grass skirts and hats and beads rounded out the costumes.

Great job and kudos for your creativity! Thanks for sharing!

Dave and the Downtown Lawrence Inc. Board

It seems like every time a member of the Sandbar family is in the news, another one or two follow right along.

Dave is starting his third year as a member of the Downtown Lawrence Board of Directors. The LJW had a little blurb about the new additions to the board, as well as the continuing members.

If you have ideas, suggestions, complaints, or whatever about Downtown Lawrence, feel free to send them his way. He can at least take your thoughts to the board.

It doesn't seem like it was January of 2008 when Dave started this foray into board membership. It's been an interesting two years for him, learning about the inner workings of an organization and getting up at the crack of dawn the morning after he's worked all night in order to make a 7:30 a.m. meeting. At least they're only once a month.

However, as I look back at the original post announcing his election to the board, I think we can all agree that he really hasn't changed that much.
