Healthy Cocktails?

Hmmm… so apparently those fruity tropical concoctions that we love to prepare just might actually be healthy for you…

WASHINGTON (Reuters) — A fruity cocktail may not only be fun to drink but may count as health food, U.S. and Thai researchers say.

Adding ethanol — the type of alcohol found in rum, vodka, tequila and other spirits — boosted the antioxidant nutrients in strawberries and blackberries, the researchers found.

Any colored fruit might be made even more healthful with the addition of a splash of alcohol, they report in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.

Dr. Korakot Chanjirakul and colleagues at Kasetsart University in Thailand and scientists at the U.S. Department of Agriculture stumbled upon their finding unexpectedly.

They were exploring ways to help keep strawberries fresh during storage. Treating the berries with alcohol increased in antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging activity, they found.

Any colored fruit or vegetable is rich in antioxidants, which are chemicals that can cancel out the cell-damaging effects of compounds called free radicals.

Berries, for instance, contain compounds known as polyphenols and anthocyanins. People who eat more of these fruits and vegetables have a documented lower risk of cancer, heart disease and some neurological diseases.

The study did not address whether adding a little cocktail umbrella enhanced the effects.

So now you don’t have to feel guilty about imbibing at the bar.  Consider it part of your daily food pyramid.  Thanks to Matt for passing this little gem along to us.

More LJW Space

Some random guy wrote a letter to the editor of the Lawrence Journal-World that mentioned The Sandbar!

Here is the letter:

Thank you to everyone who made the Lawrence St. Patty’s Day Parade a fun and successful occasion. History was made again as the Sandbar entry was the first float in this parade’s duration to have a men’s and women’s bathroom on board. Lucky, too, because it was a loooong parade!

Isn’t that cool?  You can see the letter on the LJW website here

What in the world will we do next year to top this float?

We’re Famous

Look at this…

The Lawrence Journal-World loves us.  I think The Sandbar is the darling of the local bar scene for the LJW.  Every New Year’s Eve they send a photographer in, and this was the first year in several that we didn’t have a Sandbar picture on the front page.  They did still quote some of our customers, however.

Every year, also, when St. Patrick’s Day approaches they come around again. They know where we live and where we build the float. A couple days before the parade, a picture of Dave working on it appears in the paper, sometimes with a short story.  The day after the parade, a picture of The Sandbar float usually accompanies the article about the holiday.

The LJW knows what the people want to see.

Shake it like….a lawsuit??

My mom sent me a newspaper clipping from the Wichita Eagle’s Thursday edition.  It’s part of an Associated Press feature "Weird News," which regularly shows up in newspapers around the country.

Shake it like a lawsuit

New York- A woman who said she fell off a slippery bar and injured herself while dancing in a "Shake It Like Shakira" contest is suing the Manhattan saloon that sponsored the competition.

Megan Zacher, 22, of Delanco, NJ, fell at Calico Jack’s Cantina on July 8, her lawyer, Lawrence Simon, said Tuesday.  He said the fall caused a torn knee ligament that required surgery.  Zacher was dancing on the bar, vying for the $250 prize, when she fell, Simon said.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages from Calico Jack’s.

A man at Calico Jack’s who identified himself as the manager said he had no comment.

Ironic timing of the article, given that I just wrote about dancing on the bar last week.  Come on, people.  Nobody forced her to get on the bar.  She got up there out of her own free will.  When are people going to take responsibility for their own actions and quit blaming somebody else for everything that happens to them?

We’ve had a few people fall off the bar at The Sandbar, but it doesn’t happen very often.  Employees have fallen off, too.  The funniest time was when a woman slipped and fell right into the trashcan, bottom first, and sat there and laughed.  We gave her a shirt that said "I Danced on the Bar at the Sandbar," and she laughed even harder.

Sure, our staff pays attention to the people who dance on the bar. If they seem very drunk at all, they’re not allowed up there.  The bar is always cleared of anything that might get in the way of feet.  And there’s a rail to hang on to and help catch people who lose their balance.  Not to mention the crowd of people who are usually hanging out directly in front of the bar and have caught a few falling dancers.

Of course it’s no fun if someone gets hurt. But to choose to dance on a bar and then sue the place because you fall and get hurt…that’s just no fun either.
