What Not To Do In a Hurricane

When we launched our hurricane video contest last month, we expected to be overwhelmed with entries. After all, we only asked for ten seconds of something semi-funny, and these days everyone has access to a video camera on their phone or camera. And everyone and their mother has a suggestion for the video.

However. We've only received three entries in the contest from two different people. And while they're fine entries, we'd rather have too many to choose from.

Free subs for a year, people! How does that not entice you to film something, anything!?!

For those of you who are creatively challenged, we present a list of "what not to do in a hurricane."

  • Don't dance outdoors in a hurricane. (You might lose your clothes.)
  • Don't attempt outdoor baking in a hurricane. (You'll end up covered in flour.)
  • Don't ask for a girl's number in a hurricane. (The number will blow away.)
  • Don't put a dollar bill on the wall in a hurricane. (It will blow away.)
  • Don't try to make a sandwich during a hurricane. (Food fight!)
  • Don't style your hair during a hurricane. (You'll just make it worse.)
  • Don't drink a Shark Attack during a hurricane. (Cherry juice everywhere!)
  • Don't pour beer during a hurricane. (Save the beer!)
  • Don't throw a frisbee in a hurricane. (It'll boomerang back at you.)
  • Don't surf during a hurricane. (You'll lose your board.)
  • Don't walk your dog in a hurricane. (You'll lose your dog.)
  • Don't be a flair bartender in a hurricane. (You'll lose your bottles.)

Some of these have been done, most have not. That should get you started. Remember, it doesn't have to make sense. This is the Sandbar after all. If it's funny, it works for us.

You could be a star!

Sandbar Hurricane Video #1

Our very first hurricane video.

Way back in 2001, Peach came up with the crazy idea for an indoor hurricane. Who would have thought that nine years later, we'd be working on our seventh video and still blowing napkins around the bar every night?

Many of you probably weren't around in 2001 when the first video debuted. Lucky for you, we still have a copy of it. Unlucky for those of you with motion sickness issues, we only have a copy on DVD that we couldn't figure out how to convert and upload to YouTube. Instead, we played it on our TV and recorded the screen with a Kodak zi8. Yeah, we're professional.

The original video was filmed and edited by some random guy that Peach found. It featured anchorman Dave; hurricane expert Patrick; man on the street Pat; and mayor (for real) Marty. And Knobbie from the Wheel makes a cameo appearance; see if you can find him.

Be sure to watch for the VH-1 style pop-up videos with fun facts.

We originally planned for the large fish tank to be part of the show- a storm was supposed to take place in the tank, but we couldn't ever get it to work right. Anyone remember that?

Oh, and the song! Our original hurricane song was set to the tune of Copa Cabana and sung by Peach and our friend Showtime.

Here it is, in all its ridiculous glory:

Leave us a comment and let us know if you remember this video, or if it's new to you, what you think.

Sandbar Hurricane Video Entries

Our hurricane video contest is underway! Submissions are accepted until August 7. The contest is sponsored by the Sandbar Sub Shop.

Film your best advice about "What Not To Do During A Hurricane," upload it to YouTube, and send us a link. We'll post it here, and then starting August 7, the public will vote for the finalists.

On August 14- the day of our 21st birthday party- we'll announce the finalists, and you'll get to vote for the winner. The winning video will be included in our 2010 hurricane video, and the creator will win free Sandbar Subs sandwiches for a year!

Our first two entries came all the way from Asia, proving that anyone can enter this contest using the power of the internet- no matter where you are. Margarita Monday proponent Amerika submitted these videos.

The next entry is a social-media themed entry from Raymond, who saw us tweet about the contest on Twitter.

Think you can do better? Film something and submit it to us.

We've got several videos of the staff and friends clowning around with ducks and surfboards that we'll post soon. If we can figure out our new video software, that is.

Sandbar Hurricane Video Contest

We're very excited to announce a brand new summer contest!

As you know, it's been a long time since we've had a new hurricane video. The current video was filmed over Labor Day weekend of 2007, and it was unveiled on New Year's Eve that year. It's almost three years old!

This time, for our fifth installment of the video, we want to involve YOU. We want you, the fans, to create your own video clip about "What Not To Do During a Hurricane." You've seen those segments on our previous videos- they're always funny and we think you can create some great ones.

It doesn't have to be a fancy professional recording. Use your Flip, your phone, or your camera. Just keep it to less than ten seconds, please!

Here are the rules:

  • Create your video featuring "What Not To Do During a Hurricane" in less than ten seconds
  • Upload it to YouTube and tag it with "sbhurricane"
  • Send us a link: tweet it to us, post it on our Facebook page, or email it to us

Submissions are accepted through August 7. Be sure to follow all of the rules above to be considered!

Starting August 7, the public will vote on their favorite video clips. We'll select some finalists based on the votes. We'll announce the finalists at our block party on August 14, and you'll have one night to vote for your favorite clip.

The winning video clip will be featured in our new hurricane video! The winner will also receive a prize package featuring free sandwiches for a year from our sponsor, the Sandbar Sub Shop, which opens this month in Lawrence.

Be creative! We can't wait to see what you come up with.

New Tropical Drinks

Our ever-changing rotation of tropical drinks has changed again.

Dave got the new drink machine working again (borrowed from The Wheel- not exactly a tropical drink mecca), and he's been experimenting with some new recipes and moving things around.

Zombie

This cocktail isn't scary at all. It features Malibu and melon flavors, with a mix of sour and seven. We'll have to find some zombie drink toys to hang on your straws.

Wiki Waki Woo

This drink isn't new- it's been around here for awhile. (Read about where this drink came from.) But Dave hasn't been happy with the recipe so he tweaked it just a little. It's a bunch of secret fruit juices and vodka.

Pink Flamingo

Not a new drink, but it's bounced around a few homes behind the bar lately. When the drink machine broke, Dave and Pat hooked up another tap next to the Shark Attacks, and the Pink Flamingo moved in. Now that the machine works again, though, Dave decided the Pink Flamingo looks prettiest in the machine, so it moved back to it's original spot…making way for the…

Hurricane

We love hurricanes! But you knew that already. We've never offered hurricane drinks on a regular basis, but that might change. Hurricanes have now moved into the second tap location, right next to the Shark Attacks. Any bar that gives out beads with drinks needs to have hurricanes on the menu.

And of course, we still have the Bahama Mama and Shark Attack– those aren't going anywhere!

Stop by and try a new tropical drink!
