Last Minute Preparations for St. Pat’s

Tomorrow's the big day!

The annual Lawrence St. Patrick's Day Parade is tomorrow at 1 p.m. Word has it that our float will be near the end of the long parade, so be sure to stick around to see us!

This week was full of last minute preparations:

Last night, we held another spray tan party upstairs at the bar for all the ladies on the float. Oh, and Andrew. Amelia of Premier Mobile Spray Tan came to town to make us brown, and it took her nearly almost five hours to finish everyone. Even our driver, Scott, decided to have a tan. It was a lucrative night for Amelia.

I put on a shamrock-shaped sticker last night before I got my tan, in hopes that I could take a picture of the tan line so you could see just how good a spray tan looks, but unfortunately the sticker didn't stick well and the shamrock is more of a white blob.

Update: Caroline, a Sandbar regular and float participant, managed to get a much better shamrock:

Then tonight, we had our annual meet-and-greet with our friendly float competitors from Kennedy Glass. Marty and Patty used to help build the Sandbar float once upon a time, but then they decided the parade could use another float so they took their talents back to their own shop. Since then, we've enjoyed a friendly competition to see who can build a bigger float.

The Kennedy Glass crew came over to our float headquarters to check out our creation and enjoy dinner courtesy of Sandbar Subs.

The construction crew is putting on a few last minute touches tonight and then we'll be ready for the chaos of St. Patrick's Day!

Live Music Fridays at the Sandbar Sub Shop

Starting this Friday, January 21, the Sandbar Sub Shop in downtown Ottawa will feature live music Fridays!

The lovely Katlyn Conroy will kick off the series. She's a fantastic singer/songwriter/musician in Lawrence who also happens to be Peach's niece. She'll start at 6 p.m.

The dinner specials for the evening:

  • Succulent seafood chowder with a side salad of fresh greens, feta, sunflower seeds and garden vegetables for $6.95
  • Slow roasted brisket piled high on a toasted bun with your choice of side for $6.95

After enjoying dinner and the music, head over to the Crystal Plaza Theater and enjoy a special showing of "True Grit" at 8 p.m. Special ticket price for this showing is only $6.

This event is to celebrate the Sub Shop's new live music nights and entertainment choices in downtown Ottawa, and we hope you'll join us!

Expanding in & out of Lawrence

The Lawrence Journal-World featured an article the other day about Lawrence businesses expanding outside of Lawrence. Many prominent businesses were profiled, like Johnny’s, Quinton’s and and Ingredient, who have all taken their concept and opened additional restaurants in Kansas City and other places.

We were surprised to see our name mentioned in the article, too! A long time ago, we talked about opening more Sandbars outside of Lawrence. Peach opened one in Ottawa, but then decided to go in a different direction and open sandwich shops instead, calling them Sandbar Sub Shop.

Since she opened the first one several years ago, she’s begun a partnership with the folks at Zarco66 that has included opening Sub Shops inside their gas stations. So far, two franchise locations are open- one in Lawrence on East 23rd Street and the other in Ottawa- and a third one is set to open on 6th Street in Lawrence soon.

It’s fun and exciting to expand a business and take it in a different direction! But don’t worry, we aren’t changing anything about the original Sandbar in downtown Lawrence. Except maybe adding more stuff to our walls.

Need a Job? Another Sandbar Subs Coming Soon!

The first Sandbar Sub Shop in Lawrence has been open for several months now, and another one is coming soon! The next shop will open in the Zarco 66 store on 6th Street in Lawrence. The store has been remodeled to accommodate the Sub Shop and a Scooter's Coffeehouse.

That means…help wanted!

Peach is looking for fun people with food service skills to work at the new shop. If you want to be part of a growing business that provides great food and excellent service in a fun environment, please contact Peach. You'll get to wear a Hawaiian shirt, too. How many jobs let you do that?!

E-mail your resume and your availability to peach@thesandbar.com. She'd love to hear from you!

September Specials at Sandbar Sub Shop

Have you tried the Sandbar Sub Shop yet? You've got even more opportunities to eat there now, with two locations in Ottawa and a location in Lawrence. More Lawrence locations are planned for the near future!

The Sub Shop has some great specials for September:

Buy any sub, and add a bag of chips and a 32 oz. drink for just 66 cents! (Get it? Two of the Sub Shops are at Zarco66- hence the 66 cents. Clever, no?)

If you've got a family to feed or another large hungry group, you'll love this special. Get four subs, four bags of chips, and four drinks for just $19.66. That's less than $5 per person!

Sandbar Sub Shop at Zarco66

Road construction on East 23rd Street in Lawrence might be annoying, but there's at least one bright spot over there.

The new Sandbar Sub Shop is open inside the Zarco66 station! Peach opened the first Sandbar Sub Shop a year and a half ago in downtown Ottawa, and the first franchise location opened last spring at the Zarco66 in Ottawa. The plan is to eventually have sub shops in each of the Zarco66 locations, with the first Lawrence shop on East 23rd.

The shop opened last week with a "soft opening." A grand opening celebration will take place soon, but if you're making your way through the maze of construction, stop by for a fresh sub. Dave's little sister works there, too!

There's also a new Scooter's Coffeehouse in the building, and Dave built some tables just like the ones at the Sandbar so you can sit down and eat.

Stop by and check it out!
