New Year’s Resolutions

Do you make New Year’s resolutions? If you make them, do you ever keep them?

We have a few resolutions at The Sandbar.

Of course we always hope that each year is better than the last in every way. We want the customers to be more satisfied; we want more people to experience The Sandbar; we want a windier hurricane.

One goal that we have for the {hopefully near} future is a full redesign of our official website. We’ve had the same design for quite awhile now and have been thinking of some new ideas for it. Maybe we’ll share some of the ideas here and see what you think.

Dave says that the bathrooms might be remodeled this year. The men’s room needs to be painted among other things. Perhaps he’ll add self-flushing toilets or automatic hand dryers or something fancy like that.

We’d like to expand our “where have you been in a Sandbar shirt” wall. Actually, the wall has barely gotten started. Dave and I were at Cottin’s Hardware Store the other day, and they have a couple bulletin boards with pictures of people all over the world holding a Cottin’s pen. We aspire to do the same, only with people wearing Sandbar shirts. Thanks to those of you who have contributed pictures already.

We’d like to know what your resolutions are for the new year. Share them with us in the comments. Or let us know what you think The Sandbar should do in 2008.

See you tomorrow night at the New Year’s Eve party. Don’t forget your crazy hat!

Update: New Year’s Eve Party

More exciting updates for you about our upcoming New Year’s Eve celebration.

  • Cover Charge = $10 per person.

This includes the midnight champagne toast, snack food (most likely including the infamous cheese dip, cheese balls, and other assorted cheese-related items), party favors like noisemakers and hats, and all the fun you can possibly have.

  • Silly hat contest!

Wear your best silly hat- top hats, tiaras, Dr. Seuss, fedora, whatever. We’ll have prizes for the best hats. Of course, you know how the prize thing goes- we’ll probably have to be reminded to give them out.

  • World Premiere of the new Hurricane Video!

As a special treat for our New Year’s Eve party pals, the brand new 2008 hurricane video will be shown for the first time (to the public anyway). We’ll still have the grand premiere party sometime next week or later for those of you who can’t make it on New Year’s Eve.

And, you’re encouraged to pull out the fancy party dresses and tuxedos and arrive dressed in your best! How many times during the year do you get an excuse to dress up?

And as usual, get here early. We tend to have a rush of people wanting to come in right around midnight, both before and after. Remember, our capacity is only 49 people!

Planning for New Year’s Eve

Continuing our extended run of holiday-themed posts…

Well, Christmas is barely over and already one of our favorite holidays (next to St. Patrick’s Day) is almost upon us.

For the last several years, we’ve used New Year’s Eve as another excuse to raid the Halloween costume boxes in the basement and throw a theme party- we’ve had an 80’s party, a night at the Oscars, and even Prom Night.

Last year, however, we overdosed heavily on the theme idea and now we’re stepping back, taking a break, and going back to the traditional New Year’s Eve theme of getting dressed up in fancy attire that hangs out in the back of the closet and never gets worn. Besides that, we’re just too tired to plan for a theme.

No details yet on the evening’s events, but expect a higher-than-normal cover charge (to make up for the lost alcohol sales on the one night of the year when all the non-drinkers camp out for eight hours and take up our very limited space) and the requisite champagne toast. We’ll probably have some sort of party favor, too.

Check out our past parties here. And on a side note, as I glanced through last year’s pictures, I’m amazed at how much things have changed in such short time- staff members who have disappeared off the face of the earth, more than one couple no longer together.

Should be interesting to see what 2008 brings us.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all!

Last night at The Sandbar was great. Thanks to all who celebrated with us, and even more thanks to those of you who participated in our theme party. We loved all the togas- especially the glam black sparkly ones- and pajamas and prom dresses. And it was great to see some folks dress up who haven’t dressed up in costume since the age of six.

Blair and Danny wowed the crowd when they walked in for their 9 p.m. shift wearing matching red and white heart printed togas.  One was red with white hears; the other, white with red hearts.  It seemed to be a little hard to tend bar wearing 4-5 yards of fabric strategically pinned around the body; the boys required some touch up pinning throughout the night.

Dave, as usual, spent some time coming up with a crazy costume that portrayed an actual person.  This time, he chose to live out the dream as Hugh Hefner.  For all you guys out there who like to be creative with your costumes, the JCPenney’s women’s section has been very good to Dave.  He managed to find a red silky robe to function as a smoking jacket, and with his black silky pants and pipe he pulled off the part.  Alas, no Playboy bunnies in sight (Thank God).

Brooke and Ken came in opposite togas- she in the aforementioned glam black sparkly one, complete with a sparkly headpiece, and Ken in a white one that seemed to take on a life of it’s own by the end of the night.  Justin and Michelle arrived in style in white togas as well, with ivy headpieces.  Surprisingly, none of these togas fell off any bodies during the night, at least while I was there.  I did hear rumors of some pins being lost later in the night….

We had a prom queen and king in our midst….Morgan found a shiny purple taffeta number and added her own flair with hot pink tulle.  She even convinced Emerson to dress up with her as the prom king, complete with a mullet.

The best idea ever, in my opinion, was to spend New Year’s Eve 2006 in a comfy pair of flannel pajamas.  No uncomfortable fabrics, no worries about keeping body parts covered. And the best part- going home and going straight to bed without having to struggle out of a costume!

We have a new poll off to the left, and there are new pictures in the New Year’s Eve photo album.  If you have pictures to share with us, email them! We’d love to see the party from another perspective.

Here’s a great new year!!

New Year’s Eve Announcement

We had an outstanding response to our online poll about a theme for New Year’s Eve.  Thank you to everyone who gave an opinion, even if it was more than once (you cheaters know who you are Maynard.)

Drumroll, please….

We couldn’t decide.  "My Best Friend’s Wedding" got the most votes, so technically it should be the winner, but we loved all the themes and they all got a lot of votes, so we’re doing them all.  Yes, all of them.

Come as a bridesmaid, come as a prom date. Come in a toga, or come in your pj’s. (But for the love of God, please be decent). Or, be creative and combine more than one, or even all four themes, into one costume.  Bonus points for the best creativity- it could win you prizes like cardboard tiaras, horns, or beads. Oh wait- we give those away free on New Year’s anyway.

Some of the crowd at our gift exchange were already figuring out how to incorporate more than one theme into their outfit.  I’m not going to ruin the surprise by revealing their ideas here, but there will certainly be pictures posted after the fact.

So put on your thinking caps and figure out what you’re wearing to our party.  We don’t like it when people show up to a theme party wearing regular clothes.  We’ll still let you inside, but we’d much rather that everyone come in costume. How many times in a year do you get to be crazy like that?

We aren’t sure yet what the cover charge will be, and we’ll probably have snacks available, but we don’t have details yet. More information will be posted as we have it.

One thing that’s for sure, though, is this: The Sandbar fills up early on New Year’s Eve, so if you’re planning on being there when the ball drops, you better get there early.

Theme Party, Update #2

This topic has received more votes than any other question we’ve posed on this blog.  Looks like all six of our readers are serious about their New Year’s Eve party!

As of a few minutes ago, the Wedding theme was ahead again.  Although in the last week or so, voting has been strong for the pajama party theme.  I guess the former bridesmaids are coming out in full force demanding a chance to wear those dresses again.

Justin seems to think that because he sleeps in the buff, this would be acceptable (lack of) attire if we had a pajama party.  Those of you who know him, please enlighten him.  Scary.

Jake and John even chimed in from Australia, voting for the pajama party theme.  They claim they’ll be watching the webcam to check out the party….but I have a feeling that they’ll either be partying themselves or sleeping.

We aren’t sure when we’ll announce the theme and all the details for New Year’s Eve yet but stay tuned.
